We recently connected with Joy De Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JOY thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my recent immersive audio album Who Am I. It’s deeply personal and represents a transformative period in my life. I transitioned from a secure medical career as a dermatologist to following my true calling in music and multimedia art. This shift wasn’t easy, but it was necessary for my personal growth. The project took nearly a decade of emotional exploration, experimentation with sound, and immersive technology to come to life.
Using cutting-edge immersive audio technology in collaboration with the Sony 360 RA team, I was able to bridge my background in scientific precision with my artistic vision in a way that’s truly groundbreaking. Each track becomes a narrative of my journey, capturing the emotional ebbs and flows with a sense of depth and dimension, while also exploring the potential of emerging technology. It’s meaningful to me because it’s not only the culmination of my personal evolution, but also a testament to my willingness to push the boundaries of art and technology, embracing the uncertainty and challenges of creating something truly innovative.
JOY , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I create electronic music, multimedia art, and immersive art experiences that draw from my journey and emotions. My background in medicine has influenced my creative approach—my desire to integrate science and technology into art to explore what’s possible in creating an experience that delivers more emotions and uplifts humanity. Transitioning into music and multimedia art allowed me to express the intangible aspects of the human experience.
My work is meant to evoke a sense of transformation and connection—whether through sound, visuals, or technology. By integrating immersive audio technology, I offer listeners more than music; I offer an experience that transports them into a multidimensional world.
What sets me apart is my ability to fuse technical precision with emotional depth. My work bridges art and science in a way that feels both personal and universal. I am most proud of my album Who Am I, which not only reflects my journey but also pushes the boundaries of immersive audio. I want my followers to know that I am committed to creating work that resonates on a deep emotional level, offering an immersive experience that goes beyond just sound and visual art. My brand is rooted in authenticity, passion, and innovation, and I hope to inspire others to follow their true calling, no matter how unconventional it may seem.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One pivotal moment in my journey was when I decided to leave a secure career in dermatology to pursue music and art. It wasn’t an easy decision—on the surface, it seemed like I was giving up everything I had worked so hard for. But internally, I felt a calling to explore something that was more aligned with my creative spirit. It was a risk, and there were moments of doubt, especially when the financial stability of my previous career was no longer a given. Transitioning into music and art meant stepping into unfamiliar territory, where I had to quickly adapt and learn new skills. But the desire to create, to express something deeper and more personal, was stronger. My decision to study at Berklee College of Music helped me build the foundation I needed, and though I faced many challenges, I never gave up. My resilience was tested countless times, but I kept pushing forward, believing that my true purpose was just beyond the fear. The release of Who Am I is a testament to that resilience—a full-circle moment where I could see how far I’ve come, embracing both my artistic and scientific backgrounds to create something uniquely mine.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to share a part of myself through my work and create connections with others. Art is such a powerful medium—it transcends words and taps into the emotional core of what it means to be human. My mission as a creator is to offer experiences that allow others to explore their own emotions and identities in a deeply immersive way. I aim to bridge the gap between technology, sound, and human emotion, offering a narrative that invites the listener to reflect and transform alongside me.
One of the most meaningful moments for me occurred during the immersive showcase of Who Am I, when the audience shared how deeply inspired, moved, and captivated they were by the experience in the immersive audio setting. Hearing that my work had such a profound impact on others truly meant the world to me. It reaffirmed why I do what I do: to help people connect with their inner selves and with each other, using art as a vessel for healing, understanding, and growth.
Building on this journey, I am incredibly excited about my upcoming immersive projects, which push the boundaries of spatial sound and interactive storytelling even further. These new works will continue to explore the intersection of technology and human emotion, creating transformative experiences that invite audiences into deeper, more personal sonic worlds.
