Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joy Argento. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first painting I ever sold was to a family friend. I was eighteen at the time. She commissioned me to paint a clown. I’d done members of my family as clowns and had given them as gift. found a picture of a famous person (who will remain nameless) and painted him as a clown. I earned twenty dollars for my efforts. It was a 16×20 oil painting. I was amazed that someone would give me money for something I loved doing.

Joy , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my artistic journey at the tender age of six, creating simple yet expressive line drawings of animals. My passion for art continued through my high school years, where I majored in art, honing my skills in drawing and learning how to oil paint. I pursued my craft through college art courses and an intensive workshop in North Carolina, which deepened my understanding of color and its transformative power in painting. My work has earned numerous awards at local art shows. I strive to make my paintings tell stories in a play of lights and darks. I am proficient in various mediums, including pastels, pencil, and colored pencil, my true love is oil painting. My subject matter often evokes a sense of nostalgia, inviting viewers to connect with cherished memories and meaningful moments in their lives.
My work seems resonates with my audience, celebrating the beauty of life and the power of artistic expression.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the connection I make through my art with other people. I hear stories from clients that have purchase my work about how the piece resonates with them. One person purchased a painting of a lilies and told me how his mom, who had died earlier in the grew them. Another bought a piece because it reminded him of going fishing with his brother.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey in life had brought me to many different jobs. No matter what job I had, I somehow used my artistic talent in the job, as soon as my boss learned about it. I worked in a pet store for several years and ended up making all their signs and even painting a mural on the wall. When I was still in high school I worked a summer job at out local unit of the air force reserves and also painted a mural for them. I’ve always painted for myself, family, friends and clients even if it wasn’t my main job at the time.
