We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jovaunee Pierre a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jovaunee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Yes, I have. So much that I named my business Misunderstood Tribe. I’ve always resonated with the word. 11 years ago it was my last tattoo. Now it’s my entire brand. I’m from a place where the music scene is misunderstood, political and not really industry driven. There is a sea full of talent where I reside. However, political ties seem to have placed a ceiling over my town. We are all Misunderstood.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I go by the name Jovaunee Pierre. I’m a recording artist from San Diego, California. I write, produce, and mix music. I have been recording myself and other artist for over 10 years. My love for music came at a young age. As a child I was infatuated with music. All kinds of music. I used to enjoy listening to Luther Vandross and Anita Baker in the morning as we would get ready for school. I remember and cherish those moments. My parent’s music choices instilled the artist I am today.
The first time I recorded music I was with 2 of my friends. Way back when I was 15 years old. The program that I used was called Mixcraft. A program I still use now. An updated version of course. I have used other programs such as Pro Tools and FL Studio. However, I love Mixcraft because it is where I started my love for recording.
I offer song writing, mixing and producing. I enjoy working with different artist and building connections. I am currently wrapping up a project for my artist on my independent label. MISUNDERSTOOD TRIBE LLC which was established in the summer of 2020. The company is the parent company to my label and clothing line MISUNDERSTOOD ARROGANCE.
I am most proud of my children. They are my greatest accomplishments. They are already in the studio. They love to sing and dance. I enjoy teaching them how to write and record themselves. So that they can create even when I am out providing for them.
I would like any potential listener, client or supporter to know that I whole heartedly love what I do. I put 100% effort into my music and I’m very consistent. I believe in making music but not just making music actually releasing it. I have been recording for over 10 years. However, I have only just begun releasing to digital platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. I can be found on all streaming services under the name JOVAUNEE PIERRE.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I missed the cd phase of selling music. Nowadays it is all about streaming. Society could support artist by donating directly to them through PayPal. They can buy an artist merchandise or products. They can request higher payouts for streaming royalties. The best thing they can do is stream and share the artist music.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is the feeling I get when I listen to a finished song and smile from ear to ear. Mainly because im doing what I love and it brings me joy.
