We were lucky to catch up with Jovan Cole recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jovan , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

My most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my most recent album that I put out entitled “Black Rose”. My backstory on this project reigns back to 2018. I was conceptualizing the artwork and names for this project and I wanted to tell a story of my duality. I was inspired by the name by Tyler, The Creator’s “Scum F*ck Flower Boy” album and the dichotomy of that title. There were some hard hitting and aggressive songs off that album but also complemented with some neo soul, soft and almost glamorous production. My album is kinda in that similar vein to where I wanted beats that had like this soulful sound to it but I’m also detailing my most vulnerable and darkest experiences in my life. I think it goes deeper within in the context of the album and I have also been sitting on the idea for five years. Throughout that time, I made songs that were adjacent to the situations and problems I was going through . Having the dedication of finishing it while still being in college really speaks volumes to how persistent I was onto finishing what I started.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

So my name is Jovan Cole. I’m 23 years old my birthday is January 13, 2000. I was born in New Rochelle, New York & raised in Mount Vernon, New York. I am a recent graduate from Virginia State University that received a bachelor’s degree in individualized studies. I am also a music artist, a graphic designer, photographer, content creator and songwriter. Fun facts about myself is , I love to skateboard, I love to model at times. I also love reading and journaling. I play video games from often time and I enjoy watching anime. I have a collection of CDs and vinyl. I like to also dance to relieve stress and I like to take long walks and I’ve been interested in fashion so I usually like to go thrifting sometimes. Lastly, I love sketching, because it keeps my creative mind active and I like working out to keep myself fit! Pretty adventurous and spontaneous person!

I started tipping my toes into my talents as early as 10 years old. I started drawing anime characters and then I eventually moved into portrait drawings of my favorite musicians. I started poetry at 12 year old so I had more time to refine my writing and then I eventually transitioned into rapping when I was 16 years old. I’ve been having a lot of fun doing it since then & since then i’ve been able to perform, start a band and get my name known at some pretty well known sites. I started doing photography when I was 21 because I had a black-and-white photography class that required you buying a camera and then I would always just do my own solo work with it. I have a general interest in just art period so I would just build upon my foundation and use my talents for my music, youtube channel, or any for my own personal and passion ventures to build my portfolio up.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The people’s reception and responses and what messages they take out of the music. What they can interpret and what their perception is when listening to the my music. I think that speaks a lot considering I put a lot of hidden gems and a little lyrical metaphors for the hip-hop purists and casuals to go crazy for. Another rewarding thing is just being done with the overall project and having peace knowing that I completed another musical chapter in my life and all the darkness i sat with making the project can be laid to rest.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Yes, a particular goal that’s driving me. To prove myself to the world that I have something to say and trying to convey a message that can help people who look like me who are around the same age as me.
