We were lucky to catch up with Journee Moffett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Journee, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’ve had a wide range of interests growing up. Well, just pastimes not passions. I was stuck not knowing what to do with my life while others were choosing career paths. I was introduced to photography as an art form by a good friend of mine in late 2022. It became an outlet, a way to attempt to express myself, like nothing else. Through the euphoric high of being accepted to an art show or the thrill of photographing live music, it’s the days that are quiet, spent at home that I realize this isn’t a pastime. This is my passion. Out there behind the camera is where I’m happy.
Journee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I began teaching myself everything I could about photography I soon fell in love with all its subcategories. Although plenty, I started to gravitate towards photojournalism and street photography. It’s the documentary style, the story telling of events big or small, the chance to photograph the unscripted emotions and vibes as they unfold that has me hooked! I’ve been blessed enough to be able to document live music, beautiful art shows, and thrilling car meets. Although I’m based in Phoenix, Arizona, I’m not afraid of traveling. I’ll go anywhere! So please reach out for any assignments, big or small. I’m truly looking forward to my next event; anything from peaceful protest to wild house parties, I’ll be there.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It’s not impossible, just difficult to be an accomplished artist without a social media presence. Instagram is the place to be for creators of all sorts, in my opinion. Although, for some artists, this can be daunting. From the influx of content being pushed to not receiving engagement on post. Don’t get overwhelmed! My first advice for growing a successful social media presence is to not give up. Let the negativity slide and focus on being social. Engage with post, comment, show support, share; keep it going; do not get discouraged by the algorithms and you’ll surely grow.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In this era of social media, there’s a fair amount of constraints put on artists to compete for the spotlight. With companies asking for the number of followers and algorithms dictating who gets shown, it can be difficult for an artist to be original. While trying to gain followers or follow updated algorithms to be promoted, an artist could forget to be creative or even experiment. I would like to see artists together focus on innovation within their chosen medium. And not be afraid of failing.
