We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jourdan Blue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jourdan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a kid, I enjoyed singing, but I always thought of it as more of a hobby than a career. Growing up, I sang in church and when I got to high school, I joined theatre. Performing on stage in front of a packed audience gave me a feeling I’ve never felt doing anything else. I could feel the crowd’s energy from on stage and that’s when I knew that I wanted to keep performing. During quarantine, I started writing music and posting singing videos until one night in 2021, I get a call from a friend of mine who told me they sent one of my videos in to American Idol. They wanted me to audition! I set up a zoom call and the rest is history. Once the competition ended, I quit my job and I’ve been pursuing music full time ever since!

Jourdan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Music has been a big part of my life since I was a child. It helped me get through the bad days and it made the good days even better. After being a contestant on American Idol, I quit my job and started singing in the streets of New Orleans, my hometown. I was making decent money, but after a while, I was ready for bigger things. A video posted by a random passerby went viral and I started gaining a following on Tiktok. I saw an opportunity in that moment, and I started posting on social media every day. Surely enough, I kept gaining a consistent following and started livestreaming regularly until eventually I was making more money from livestreaming than I was making as a street performer. With this newly gained platform, I plan to spread positivity and love to my audience, but also help enlighten the world! I am a big advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, as well as children in incarceration. I just want to do everything I can to make a positive impact on this Earth when I leave.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Honestly, the most rewarding thing about my job is the fact that I’m doing what makes me happy. I enjoy the fact that I can work at my own pace and make my own schedule, but those are just perks of the craft. The best part of everything is that I don’t dread waking up every day to go to work. I get to enjoy every day because I truly love what I do! I think that is important no matter what career path you’re on. Every job has both it’s upsides and downsides, but if you can make a positive impact on the world while doing something you’re passionate about, that’s what I consider being successful.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back on my journey, I realized that taking more risks and proactively seeking advice from those I looked up to would have greatly benefited my growth. I wish I had known the importance of putting myself out there, reaching out to more people I admired, and asking for their insights and advice. Taking that first step can open doors to valuable collaborations and tons of other opportunities. I’ve learned that the creative process is not just about individual skill development but also about building meaningful connections within the creative community. Now, by embracing a mindset of curiosity and willingness to ask more questions, I have not only accelerated my own learning and enhanced my creativity, but also contributed to the growth of the larger creative community.
