Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jourdan Ashlee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jourdan, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I would say the biggest risk I’ve taken as a business owner is going full time for my business. When I was in the workforce, I felt like I was going hard in my business. I would work during the day and see clients in the evening and on the weekends. Working for yourself and for someone else is an intense struggle, for sure. That whole time I thought I was putting full time effort into my business. After working full time for myself and putting dedicated time into J. Ashlee Makeup & Skin, that is when I started to see the adverse effects and the benefits. Deciding to have your own business hold up everything you have can be uneasy and terrifying. When you are able to it is amazing that something you put together can so strong.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I always say, my love for makeup and skin care started very early. When I was in high school. Everyone started to notice how good I was at it. I had a friend who encouraged me to take an aesthetics program. It has been history ever since. In 2018 J. Ashlee Makeup and Skin was born. Finding my speciality in restorative skincare and Soft Glam makeup really helped me direct my focus.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In the beginning of my Esthetician program I was already a makeup artist, making money and gaining clientele so I was a wise-head. That is the worst way to be in the beginning of anything. I thought I knew all I could know about makeup (crazy, right?!). Luckily, the more I learned the more I realized I needed to be attentive and teachable so I adjusted that mindset quickly! You really can stunt your own growth by not receiving the messages that are brought to you.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The best advice I’d say for building your social media presence is to post continuously, let your audience get to know you and don’t compare yourself to others. Post everything! It is important to show what your skills are. Do not worry about things being perfect, you can delete and rebrand your social media dozens of times. Letting your audience get to know you and what goods you offer is your top priority. People like to build connections, its human nature! Letting yourself be known is a great way to grab the eye of potential clients. Last but not least, Do not compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different. It’s great to grab inspiration from others, just be sure to not let that turn into self depreciating.
