We recently connected with Josseline Daluz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Josseline thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with Kalon by solving a problem I was experiencing which was stubborn acne blemishes. Cystic acne left me with scars and blemishes that just never went away. I tried everything and nothing worked, not even the “natural” stuff. I knew that if I was experiencing this issue, so were others.
After lots of research and experimenting, I came up with the perfect concoction that cleared my blemishes naturally and safely. I gifted my first products to my family and friends. They loved how it made their skin look and feel and from their reactions, I knew I had something solid, something I could bottle and sell.
With their support and encouragement, I started envisioning myself producing higher quantities of these items. I had my doubts about whether or not I wanted to turn this into a business or just keep it as a passion project. I was scared I’d lose my love for it. I was also concerned if anyone would actually trust me to make something they’d put on their skin. I wasn’t professionally trained, I just knew what worked for me and the ones closest to me. I had so many questions about how it could work and what I’d need to do to sell the items along with how I’d brand this new business idea.
I started with local markets and Etsy to test out my theory on developing it into a business. From the sales and reactions of complete strangers, it was evident I had to keep going and develop some sort of branding. I knew I wanted to keep everything simple and clean, just like the ingredients. From the packaging to the lettering, it all needs to radiate nature and love which is two major themes that inspired this idea in the first place; loving oneself and nature.
I Knew it could work because the products do what they promise which is rare to find in the skin care industry. Not only do my products work, they are environmentally friendly as well as chemically free. Fun fact; they are also safe enough to eat. It’s unique, inexpensive, safe, and effective! From years of experience testing out popular skin care products on my acne prone skin, that is hard to find. A diamond in the rough!
Josseline , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Kalon was born in January 2020 during the height of the Covid Pandemic. I found myself fed up with the dark spots left on my face from years of suffering with cystic and hormonal acne. I wasted too much money and time on skin care products that just didn’t work for my skin. It effected my confidence and the way I showed up in the world. I felt hopeless and unworthy.
After many negative experiences with prescription drugs and over the counter products, I took control of my skin by educating myself on the ingredients used to make these products. I learned about toxic chemicals like parabens, fragrances, and sulfates used to create some of the most popular products. They are not only harmful to the immune system but may get absorbed through the skin, cause allergic reactions and harm to our internal organs.
As a Health Coach with a passion for health and wellness, this bothered me to my core! I didn’t want myself or others using products that may make us sick over time. I went ahead and reduced my chemical usage with all products, including skin care. The only problem was the natural skin care products I tried weren’t fading any marks on my face. They left me dry and disappointed yet still determined to figure out a solution. I took matters into my own hands and created the perfect mixture of natural ingredients that would eventually help with dryness and hyperpigmentation on my face. The Shea Butter Head to Toe Moisturizer was my first creation. The results from using it every night for six months was remarkable! For the first time in years, the hyperpigmentation was gone and my face was evenly toned! Till this day, it has been the only product that has had this kind of drastic effect on my skin. I truly believe it is one of a kind and something that is missing in the skin care market.
With my success, I felt confident enough to create more products for myself like body scrubs and lip balms. I eventually began gifting them to family and friends and they enjoyed them so much, they wanted to buy more. The rest is history!
I personally hand make every product and make sure they actually do what it’s supposed to. Every item is created with love and care. I am forever grateful for going on this journey because now I can continue to help others. By healing my own skin I was able to gain more confidence, love who I am inside and out and prioritize my own self care. I hope to spread this kind of self love and positive energy to my clients through my products.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word of mouth and sampling. Skin is very personal and unique so it’s understandable that it would be difficult to change our products. However, with skin care, you may be more inclined to give a new product a try if you notice someone’s skin is glowing and has a healthy appearance. This has been so true for my business. I get new customers from people who’ve never tried my products but either see my skin or someone they know who’s using my products. I encourage all my friends, family and customers to share their experiences with anyone who comments on their skin and this has been super effective with growing my clientele.
I also sample my products at markets. Sampling helps clients experience for themselves how their skin may react to the products. Once they see and feel the effects, they are typically hooked and want to take the items home. Adding in sampling rather than just displaying my items at the markets has sky rocketed my business.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I typically meet most of my customers at local craft markets so I genuinely like to stay in touch with them through social media. Most people spend lots of time online so it’s easy to stay connected there. When I receive a new follower, I typically follow back and engage with them and their content on the platform. It’s important for me to build genuine connections with my customers and be as hands on in my business as much as possible. I want my customers to know who I am and feel like they can trust me and my business. If I can develop sincere relationships with my customers, even it it’s just online, I’m confident the loyalty will follow.
