Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Josiah Smith . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Josiah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was young I would watch a movie then for the rest of the day I would pretend to be in the movie. I knew from a young age that I wanted to use my creativity somehow. Social media now a days has given me the opportunity to act and create the scenes.
Josiah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the social media space back when vine was around. It was fun to challenge myself to create a video that was only 6 seconds long. I’ve developed the skill over the years and now I create videos not just for myself but also for major brands (Doritos, Buffalo Wild Wings, Klondike, eBay, Solitaire and many more). What’s very important to me is staying true to my brand of making family friendly and clean content the whole family can enjoy. It’s not worth compromising my convictions for extra money.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It’s important to believe in what you do. Even if no one around you takes it as serious as you believe it is or can be. Hobby’s aren’t really hobby’s anymore when they start to bring in real money. I always believed I could turn this into a business. If I could stay consistent and continue to get better. A few close relationships hurt me early on, discouraging me and telling me to stop making videos. “I’m too old” “I’m too corny” “just stop”. Though it did slow me down at times, it didn’t stop me. And now over 300 million views later, I’m glad I didn’t give up.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe the best way you can help creatives now a days is to be honest. To many people watch a video, laugh and enjoy it but don’t hit the like button, don’t drop a comment or hit share. This is like watching a basketball game enjoying the slam dunk but not cheering. Why are we honest with some entertainment but not in this space. It’s okay to show love, it’s okay to support, to follow and admit you enjoyed it. It also encourages us to keep creating, people like what you’re doing!
