Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua Zatarain. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joshua, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently had the pleasure of writing a song for my dear friend’s wedding. He is the first of my closest friends to marry and one I have made music with since we were children.
Upon receiving the save the date, I immediately picked up the guitar and sang the most simple chorus I could:
Clemence, Elan, today is your wedding, and this is your song.
A few months later, as the wedding date approached, I wrote verses to complete the song.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Joshua Zatarain, and I am a commercial writer for a boutique Los Angeles agency.
By and large, I alleviate the pressures of writing en masse for others. I practiced creative writing early in life.
My turn of phrase and observational skills allow me to adapt the language of most industries to the everyday reader. My interest in common parlance drives my desire to elucidate a given subject in a way all can understand.
Coupling my passion with my livelihood has indicated a level of personal success.
I am a writer for hire; hit my line.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning the right way to do things liberated me as a creative writer. When I feel like my work does not meet the standard set by my idols, I doubt myself.
Therefore, I remind myself that prescriptions and formulas for success sometimes fail, and what is prudent and sensible may be unfit for innovation.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I recently read The Catcher in the Rye for the third time.
It is interesting to see how my perception of the book has shifted, like a big roadside attraction that becomes smaller and disappears in the rearview mirror.
Life is mutable; our thoughts should be the same.
