We recently connected with Joshua Young and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
I feel like a lot of producers mainly seek artists to build with or spend their time chasing major placements. I believe as a producer I can market myself as an artist and use that buzz to to attract clients, opportunities and fans alike.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Josh but I go by Jomy. I am an Artist/Producer/content strategist from Saint Paul. Getting my start back in 2009, I remember being enthralled with the sounds and creativity of The Neptunes. It is these same sounds, melodies, and ultimately iconic moments of musical expression that shoved me into the world of musical production. With this newfound passion, the drive to manifest this into something bigger became paramount. Over the next decade, I have honed my craft before releasing my first and fully completed album in 2019 titled 651, as well as 17 projects since then.
As of 2022, my goal is to put out albums and singles as well as build relationships with other artists. Aside from production and networking, I focus a lot on social media marketing and content strategy. It’s important to know what works with your audience, when to post it and how to understand the results. I study different social media platforms and stay up to date with their changes as well as how to work with them.
One of the big tools I use to attract attention to my page is animation. I have a few animators I work with to create art pieces that I pair with my music. This makes it stand out and lengthens the engagement of my posts. The feedback I’ve received in regards to these posts has been better than expected.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My main social media page is Instagram. The page has gone through quite a few phases. From different angles, precise times of post, colors I use in posts and even hashtags – it’s been an interesting couple of years when it comes to building a name for myself on social media.
At this point, the best advice I have is to research the platform you use. There are people on YouTube who have dedicated pages that explain changes to the rules and functionality of these platforms. Staying on top of these changes and understand what you are now able/not able to do is very beneficial when reviewing your analytics. Knowing what ads to run and understanding why an ad isn’t worth running is helpful to the client as well as the potential consumer. You want to represent yourself correctly as well as have an end goal.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Frequency is key. You want to have regular posts up without over doing it. There is also a factor of quality over quantity. I don’t post just because I feel like I need to, I wait until I actually have something to say/show. I typically plan my posts a month ahead so I know what is going up and when. I think playing around with this aspect of marketing helped me a lot. I understand that there are others online that do what I do. I felt it was important to make sure I have an identity separate from that and that it’s clear what I’m bringing to the table.
