Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua Umahi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joshua thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
At the time where the COVID-19 Pandemic was at its “peak”, keeping everyone inside and quarantined in 2020, I had one prevailing emotion above all the other emotions I was feeling at the time, which was the feeling of nostalgia. To escape all the depressing feelings I had at that time, I fell back on nostalgia often, trying to remember the good times of when I was a kid, playing around with my friends at recess. I was a very creative kid in all aspects when I was younger, and I didn’t carry that along with me at that point in my adulthood. So, after a lot of tinkering and deliberation, I came up with The Recess Bell.
Joshua, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Joshua Umahi, 27 years old from New York. I got into the content creation/media industry first through getting on the radio in college and developing as an fun & engaging on-air personality. From there, I created The Recess Bell, which offers content of many types: podcasts, videos, shows, articles, journalistic work, poetry, photography, etc. I’m most proud of the platform’s ability to connect with people in a way that makes them want to collaborate with us. The Recess Bell aims to inspire creatives to be unrelenting and ambitious when it comes to their work, and we consider it an honor to be a part of that.
Any advice for managing a team?
I’ve found success in managing a diverse team with many different personalities in just being as humble as I can possibly be, while also consistently trying to find a common ground with each and every person on the team. I try to be a human being — not a boss or a commander. I rely on my sense of humor a lot too — laughter is medicine for the soul. This helps keep a lively environment where people are comfortable expressing themselves with lowered nerves.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
In school, I was assigned a book titled “Mindset — The New Psychology Of Success” by Carol Dweck. This book is ultra-significant to me because I began reading at a time in my life where I was discouraged, depressed, and unmotivated. Mindset details the difference between a “fixed mindset” and a “growth mindset”. In short, a fixed mindset causes one to place limits on themselves, while in a growth mindset, limits don’t exist. It reframed my entire … well, mindset, and I stopped putting limitations on who I could be and the things I could accomplish.
