We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joshua Tovar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JOSHUA below.
JOSHUA, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
The most important thing my parents did for us growing up was teach us the values of Jesus and the principles of the Bible, which formed our work ethic and developed our character. Aside from this, my parents forced me and my sisters to pick a sport, pick an instrument, and stick to it. This taught us a great deal of discipline, grit, resilience, and the willingness to give top quality effort even when there is no passion or motivation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Joshua Tovar, known as JoshuaLife, a Latin artist based in Miami of Colombian heritage, and founder of Life’s Bread Music LLC. My journey began with a love for storytelling through music, which grew into a purpose-driven career. I create music that blends romantic, playful vibes with deeper themes of identity, respect, and faith.
At Life’s Bread Music, our mission is to restore the identity of the youth, the dignity of women, and the presence of Jesus in LatinUrban music. What sets me apart is this focus on authenticity and purpose—I aim to inspire and uplift through every song.
I’m proud of milestones like reaching multiple Spotify Charts including Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and many others, as well as many global iTunes charts and being featured on Billboard, but what means the most to me is connecting with my audience. My music is about celebrating life, love, and faith in a way that’s real and relatable. To new listeners: thank you for joining the journey—there’s so much more to come.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building a presence on social media is much simpler than many think. As in any industry, if you simply roll the dice and gamble your efforts without doing proper research, you will likely fail, and even if you don’t, you are leaving success up to chance, when it could be up to you. The most important factor is the combination of discipline and humility. Be disciplined enough to constantly post content and constantly engage with your following as big or little as it might be. But also be humble enough to pay attention to every ounce of feedback and make self-reflection and self-improvement a priority in your daily life. This will make your content and strategy get better every time, as you are constantly looking for ways to improve. Secondly, network with everyone and never underestimate anyone. You never know which average Joe will be the next superstar, and there are always people reaching success before you do, so be in their circle before anyone else is. Thirdly, be creative. Using a personal example of my own page, it was very difficult to get people to engage with my posts when I would share my music, but when I started engagin with all the negative comments, and embraced the negative comments, I thought of a strategy where I challenged my followers to leave a negative comment “dissing” my music. This made the comments on my posts go from an average of 100-200 comments to 800-1500 comments per post, and an average of 50-60k views per post to 200-300k views per post, all with a single strategy.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The biggest lesson of raising capital was learning to do things I don’t want or like to do. I always wanted to be an artist, but I did not want to do music for others, I wanted people to know me for my music, not another artist. However, producing, songwriting, beatmaking, and managing marketing campaigns for other artists for 6 years before releasing my own music is what helped me develop my sound. I learned many important aspects of music business and polished my skills before putting myself in the role of the artist. Now, instead of simply being an artist, I have my own label, where I have my own artists, and I work with other labels, producing for their artists, songwriting, and running marketing for other artists. This helped me raise the capital necessary to launch my own career. Always be seeking to network with others!
