We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joshua Starr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joshua below.
Alright, Joshua thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I’ve taken as an independent artist was spending thousands of dollars on studio time and publishing platforms without a legitimate fan base. At first I saw a good turn around because I have a good support system , but after a month or two it declined dramatically. It felt like I was wasting money and time trying to do things on a larger scale without putting in the groundwork first.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My stage/ business name is Stvrr, (pronounced star) . I started my own label and LLC in fall of 2019. I originally organized a small group of rappers, talented producers and engineers in 2010 (Starlifegang). I was only 15 at the time. Forwarding to 2019 , I wanted to do everything I didn’t do right the first time around on a larger scale and establish myself as a independent mogul. The brand “THA VII’S” AKA THE LUCKY ONES was where the idea for how I address myself and the steps as I took as an artist in recent years came from.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The term “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is false! Knowing more about the industry you’re stepping in can take you a lot further than just knowing someone already involved . Networking is a great tool for anyone creating a business or name for themselves, however learning the business prior to making certain decisions can take you places that a mutual friend won’t .
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my following off of my already well-known popularity. It wasn’t difficult to get the word out of anything I had my hands on. The only difficult part about social media is getting your followers to actually believe you. It feels like you have to compete and consistently go out of your way to always remain relevant. I decided early on that I wouldn’t take on that approach. Fortunately for me I have support from multiple cities and states, so when the noise died down in one city it rose in the next.
