Joshua , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
With many moments in my life since understanding my purpose in life, there’s nothing that makes me happier than being someone who is a creative artist. The biggest moment that made me realize I was made for the creative space and lifestyle was in 2023. I had just got officially accepted into my agency and took off with acting gigs back to back. I started with a few acting companies and just really moved into the acting field in the real world. I even had a few paying gigs that were amazing experiences and also stepping stones in the way as well for how I need to move. And then in June of the same year, I was in the process of working on an outside Shakespeare play and I collapsed for not taking things easy and pushing myself too hard and not taking any breaks. I had to get rushed to the hospital and everything. Once the play was done, I came back home and started working a work-from-home job. and that was the best move to make to be able to still provide and do something with my time. However, the constant repetition that I was experiencing and the fact nothing was exciting going on. It made me feel like I was wasting not only my time but more importantly my purpose in what I was put on this Earth to do. Since then I found other ways to still have a job but also have the same feeling with it that I have with being in the acting space; being an Audio/Video Technician. It’s not the same, but it has the consistency of excitement. From the places that I may have to travel to for work, to all the different types of personalities that I will be able to work with and bring successful shows with.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So for those of you who do not know who I am, my name is Joshua Perry. I’m 27 years young, hahaha! I’m just 27 years old, I got a bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Fine Arts, and have been blessed and honored to be able to use said degree since I got it. I work with an Agency in North Carolina, A-List Modeling and Talent. I also have a freelancing job with a different variety of Audio/Video companies as well. I can provide on an acting scale; Acting, Voice Acting, Stage Combat, Extra work, Stunt Man, Camera Work, Boom Holder, Gaff Assistance, and BTS Work. When it comes to the A/V world, I can provide you with; great customer support, Problem-solving techniques, critical thinking, effectiveness, grit, outstanding work ethic. a great personality on top of all of this that makes it easy to work with. Some of the few problems when it comes to the A/V world that I have solved for clients is just giving them a great communication foundation with me personally so they have someone that they can reach out to personally when things are going wrong so that I can look first hand at the problems and solve them immediately. Also enjoy making sure that even though this could be a big event, enjoy the event more than the BTS aspects because that is what we are here for, to make sure everything that you worked hard on goes smoothly and is executed. When it comes to the acting standpoint, what do I not bring to the table? I will give my all to the acting scene mind, body, and soul to bring out any character that needs to be brought to life. Now, I will say some characters are difficult to let go of fully and that is where actors have the character withdrawal…yes it is a REAL thing. I also want to elaborate on what I mean by this as well. There have been many characters that I have personally played over the years, and the ones that I have had trouble letting go of are the emotional, and sentimental types. For instance, Bono from Fences or Ogun Sizes from In the Red and Brown Water. Characters like that are my favorite characters because I relate to them so much and see myself in them to the point I feel as though I’m just playing myself and not having to put on a mask like all the other characters. The biggest thing that I want EVERYONE to take away about me…that I’m someone who enjoys a great challenge and responsibility. Giving me moments to prove myself to not only you but to MYSELF that I can do whatever I put my mind to is amazing. Love surprising myself and showing myself that nothing is not that difficult if you put the time in. Everything about me is just a high-on life experience that brings nothing but good energy and good times without the ‘HIGH’ feeling hahaha.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Geez, I’d say having to do a full performance for a week straight with a broken hand. Yes, I’m so serious too. My hand never healed back the same way either. So what happened was it was like two or three weeks before the performance and I had a terrible day overall with work and classes. I went into rehearsal pouring my heart out but I was getting very distracted to the point that I will personally say I blew up in not the most professional way. By doing that, I punched a door and the door punched back doing a clean bone break in my right hand. What makes matters worse is that the doctor’s office didn’t give me a cast, they only gave me a brace. So for two weeks, I had to rehearse with my hand in a temporary brace that wouldn’t stay on, and during the week of performances, I had to take the cast off and act like nothing was wrong but geez I was in pain after every scene…didn’t help that I opened the show by banging a beat on a congo drum. But it was my best performance to date in my opinion and it helped me to bring life to a character that has stayed with me my whole life since.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The biggest thing that I would personally say is being able to help people see life differently. I’ve played many characters and roles that people have personally come up to me afterward telling me that I was their favorite character, even in small roles where I may have had only one line in the whole play. Knowing that I can get people’s attention even when I don’t do anything shows that not only that I have a large stage presence, but that I bring life to everything I do so well that it makes it enjoyable for people to watch me in my state of happiness. I’ve also had people tell me that my works have helped inspire them to rekindle relationships and friendships with family and peers. It’s nice to know that I can make someone that has a bitter moment in there personal life that I was able to give them a different perspective to be able to make things better between them and someone else. Makes me feel like a proud person and that I’m doing what I’m put on this Earth to do, to inspire and change people’s lives for the better.
