We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joshua McCarty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joshua below.
Joshua, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I grew up lost like a lot of people. Not knowing what my purpose was in life and going from job to job. In 2007, my life changed forever when I went to prison for a poor mistake. I served six and a half years across four different prisons in Georgia and when I was released in 2013, I realized how hard it was to get a decent job. No matter what I did, I could not find a job that paid enough to keep me afloat. So after a lot of thinking & praying, I decided to start a YouTube channel. I purchased an affordable Panasonic GH3 in hopes of creating a Youtube channel but something else happened. Someone saw me with a camera and asked if I was available to take a video of their birthday party. I did not know anything about video at the time but they mentioned they would pay me $100. I realized then that I could make a living doing this so I filmed their birthday and that started everything I have become today. Since then I have worked with brands like Planet Fitness, Edible Arrangements, Dow, and more. I am thankful for everything I have and see how believing in yourself can take you so far.

Joshua, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Of course. My name is Joshua McCarty. I am a Commercial Filmmaker based in Georgia but travel often. My motto is “I came from prison to film” due to be spending 6 years across four different prisons in Georgia until my release in 2013. Through years of schooling and hard work, I now have my own Media company and we make commercials for businesses who need new, fresh videos to help reach their target audience. I am most proud of how far our business has come and how my skills have increased over the 5 years I have been in the industry. It is truly awesome to see the people I have met and became friends with all through a camera essentially.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the best things about being in Film and I am sure a lot of people can attest to this is, meeting new people and the connections that are built. There are many perks to being a Freelance filmmaker like, working on your own schedule, doing something you enjoy and getting paid, lol but the most rewarding part is being around like-minded individuals who just love film.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My favorite book of all time is “Confessions” by St. Augustine. This book has transformed, not only my business but also me as a person. It is truly an inspirational piece of work and every time I re-read it, it makes me fall in Love with God more. I recommend anyone to read this book because hard times will come and sometimes you have to believe in someone’s belief in you until your Faith kicks in.
