Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua Mather. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joshua, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My new project, Therma (an anagram of my last name,) is my new passion project. I’ve been doing music professionally for a while now, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Therma is a reconnection to why I started. With this music I’m not afraid to be loud or nerdy. I love sci-fi. I love giant robots. I love loud rock music. I like to think that all of that can be found in Therma.
Joshua, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve made music for other people, and I’ve made music for myself. This music is for me. Hopefully there are other people who feel like I feel and respond to this music the way I do. Its not that I don’t care if people like it, I would love it if they did. But making music for other people has never had the outcome I’ve wanted. So hopefully this project will find an audience. It won’t be for everybody, and that’s OK.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I used to play cover music, almost exclusively. I don’t want to knock it, its a specific skill all on its own. I’m grateful for the time I spent getting my 10,000 hours in, on stage and behind a mic. When the pandemic happened I had a forced reset like a lot of people did. In 2019 I was burned out on my cover music career. When I got back to work after that very, VERY long break, I realized that my love for it was still gone. I figured since I’m having to rebuild anyway, lets do things different and pursue creating the music I’ve always wanted to make.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
No, I think I wish there were fewer resources. As an over-thinker who is insecure about his work, I think I struggle with the amount of options there are out there. I can get lost on researching everything from guitar strings to what shirt brands to print my merch on. Not exactly big picture stuff. Maybe a mentor could’ve helped me not to get hung up on all that small stuff, I don’t know. Maybe its just a personality flaw.
