We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Lofton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on, has to be my first album “Humble Beginnings”, on all major platforms. Initially, I didn’t want to make a project! I thought I’d build my catalog with releasing a plethora of singles. However, I was having a really rough year, with school, work, relationships, and the direction I was headed in. As time went by, I became overwhelmed with the urge to write, about how these things affected me, and my experiences that molded me into the person I am today. The title of the album was formed through humility and it’s the beginning of more to come, I expect to be doing this for a long time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Joshua! Josh aka J. Loft, born and raised in the Southside of Washington, DC. There’s definitely beauty in the struggle! As a child I was already writing short stories and sketching. Making music wasn’t in the plans, animation and creating a tv-series were the dreams. The older I got, singing in choirs, practicing instruments, I found myself writing raps as a hobby. Doing late-night cyphers with the homies around the neighborhood. After highschool, I made a decision to take music seriously, the passion and drive I have for it needed to be explored. What makes me different from anyone else?! Not only the content of my music, which I deem as good music. The authenticity, originality and versatility that you get from the songs. Lastly, fun fact I’ve been classically trained to sing in different languages. I’m most proud of all the opportunities I’ve received through the power of music, performing music I made for small and large groups of people is very monumental. You can do anything, you set your mind to, and don’t be afraid to take risk, because we take risks everyday leaving our homes.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission is to help as many people as I can through the music, whether hearing it is healing, assisting the younger generation, those who understand the struggle to make the best with what you have. To help my family and friends through the adversity. I’ve lost some really good folks, who believed that with the music I could make a difference and possibly save lives.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve created so much music over the span of a decade or so. Things I’ve put my heart and soul into, that were very dear to me. I ended up losing books, folders, and notepads of music that I’ll never get back. This event really discouraged me from continuing the process, of creating music and I thought that was it for me. I stopped writing for awhile, lost sight of wanting to use music as not only a release, but to share with others. It took time, but eventually I decided to pick up the pen, and convince myself I can make even better music then the previous.
