Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua (Kuhr) Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joshua (Kuhr), looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always enjoyed music and have been learning new instruments and techniques since the age of 10. I started out learning cello and becoming familiar with classical music. I ultimately knew I wanted to do this professionally when I started writing songs of my own when I was 17. It was the only thing to do that really made me content with my life and I knew I wanted to pursue it no matter the hardships that might occur.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into making music for myself and my personal healing. I create bittersweet heartfelt songs that capture my inner kid. I also am a producer and love making instrumentals of various genres. I also want to get into making game music. What sets me apart is my experimentation in my music. I want my music to be as fresh and genre defying as possible. I am most proud of my comfort as a performer. Over the years I always was nervous about how I was going to be able to put on a show and sing in front of people. I hope you all continue to follow my journey as a creative.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
To not worry so much about paid promotion. There’s a time and a place for marketing, but ultimately focusing on organic growth. I worked with a pr company that helped promote one of my singles and didn’t quite run the way I was anticipating. All in all I didn’t get much worth except some playlist adds and some blog write ups that didn’t really help me grow. but It was pretty expensive and I should’ve just done my own play-listing and more social media posts.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think the best way to support the artist community is going out to shows and or galleries and taking the time to encourage them to keep doing what they are doing. I think everyone has doubts and stress about theirs lives, but the ups and downs in life of being an artist and putting yourself out there can really make you feel the absolute worst.
