We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua & Jacelyne Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua & Jacelyne , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
From our observation, the demand for the arts industry doesn’t seem as important in Tulsa as other states. The desire for recreational arts has diminished due to inflation costs, unavailable funds, poor money management, segregation, or the lack of patronization.
Joshua & Jacelyne , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jacelyne Jackson and I am the owner of Serenity Center For The Arts. Serenity currently focuses on Dance and Art classes for children ages 6 up to adults. Dance has been a part of my life since I was 3 years old. I have had the wonderful opportunity to travel across Europe, and throughout majority of the United States with dance. As I progressed in skill and age, all of my training then translated into me becoming a dance instructor. I fell in love with the gift of training students and pouring into them all that I had acquired. It is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world.
The decision to open Serenity Center For The Arts was birthed when I saw just how much the arts was suffering. Some would say that Visual & Performing Arts is recreational or extra-curricular, but I would say that it goes hand in hand with academic learning.
Serenity Center For The Arts offers different genres of dance such as, Ballet, Jazz Funk, Hip-Hop, West African, and Afrobeats. We also offer visual art painting sessions by way of acrylic paint as the medium. Our students get to be apart of a community that fosters their desire while teaching them life skills and discipline in the process.
Although there are dance studios far and wide, we are set apart because we are the only studio in South Tulsa that offers the variation of styles we offer. We are super proud of our product because our curriculum has proven to be effective. Our students and their growth & development are a priority for us. We want our potential clients and students to know that Serenity Center For The Arts is a safe place. We will equip our students with the tools they need to be successful professionals.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Serenity Center For The Arts was established in 2018 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It took some time to grow my business and my clientele. We were marketing, promoting, and enrolling students into our studio and things were looking good. Our studio grew and we were thriving. In 2022 we were lead to move to Tulsa, OK where we have since re-established Serenity. It was gut-wrenching and quite frankly, it was devastating to move away from what was comfortable and start all over.
I am so grateful for this pivot because we have had the opportunity to meet some great human beings that are genuine and caring. In our process of growing Serenity, we wouldn’t change a thing. Being in Tulsa, OK has been rewarding. Although this pivot was hard, we have faith that everything that was built before will be built ten times better than it was in the past.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Serenity Center For The Arts recently opened its doors in Tulsa, OK in June 2023. The best source of new clients have been Eventbrite marketing. Once people come in the studio and experience a class, then they go and tell a friend.
