We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Well, it was initially challenging to come up with a unique name. But after long deliberation, the word ‘pixel’ stood out to me. I first paired it with other names, but then I tried it with my name abbreviated. Looking back, it all fits in perfectly as I don’t only focus on photography but on other digital spaces. The term ‘pixels’ refers to a dot representing a single color and the smallest unit of a digital image or display. The rest is history. Welcome to Jag Pixels.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As the founder and operator of Jag Pixels, my creative journey is driven by a dual commitment—to craft high-quality and visually compelling content for my clients while fostering a sense of enduring memories. At Jag Pixels, our mission extends beyond capturing just pixels; it’s about creating lasting memories that resonate with individuals and communities alike. Through our tagline, ‘Not Just Pix But Memories,’ we emphasize the profound impact of visual storytelling. Every photograph we take is a piece of art that encapsulates cherished moments, evoking emotions and preserving memories that last a lifetime. This commitment to quality and emotional resonance is at the core of our creative process.
Moreover, as a patriotic entrepreneur, I am deeply passionate about contributing to the growth and prosperity of our nation. Jag Pixels is not just a creative endeavor but a platform through which I aim to be a nation builder. By providing employment opportunities and fostering talent within our borders, I aspire to contribute to the economic development of our community and country.
In essence, Jag Pixels is more than a photography and content creation business; it is a vehicle for crafting memories, fostering creativity, and actively participating in the development of our nation. Through our work, we strive to meet our client’s needs and positively impact the lives of those we employ and the community we call home.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
It has been a remarkable and fulfilling adventure, from a side hustle in photography to establishing Jag Pixels as my main full-time business. It all began at the age of 10, inspired by my uncle, a freelance videographer, during a football game where I captured the winning goal with a camera. That moment sparked a love for photography, leading me to enter competitions and taste early victories. Initially, on the path to becoming a doctor, my passion for journalism grew, and I transitioned to university while nurturing my photography hobby. Starting with a simple point-and-shoot camera, I faced challenges affording expensive gear. However, my determination and love for the craft propelled me forward.
The turning point came in high school when I monetized my hobby by charging football players for photographs. Despite some initial resistance to the pricing, a defining moment occurred when a player compared me to another student photographer who acknowledged the quality of my work and willingly paid for it. This experience taught me the importance of self-worth and belief in my skills.
2017, I officially founded Jag Pixels, a certified registered photography business, in February 2021. Throughout the years, I continued to build my expertise and portfolio, culminating in winning the Gleaner’s Capture Kingston Photography Competition in February 2017.
One of the pivotal moments in my career was a Courtesy Call from the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Andrew Holness, in March 2021. This recognition was a testament to the impact of one of my photographs, which earned a place in the 2021 Office of the Prime Minister Calendar.
From those early days charging for football match photos to receiving national recognition, the journey has been marked by continuous growth and achievement. Jag Pixels is not just a business; it’s a platform through which I express my passion, provide high-quality content, and contribute to the economic landscape of my nation.
As a person who loves networking and creating ‘magic,’ I am excited about future collaborations and opportunities for Jag Pixels. My belief in self-worth and my unwavering dedication to capturing and creating memories drive my ongoing commitment to success in photography and content creation.
