We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The moment when I had my first solo at church, I knew I was destined to be a creative force in the arts. Since then, my gifts have expanded beyond singing. I. now compose music in various genres and enjoy telling stories through musicals.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been composing songs in my head. Looking back, the songs I created could be placed in any musical. However, my personal bout with anxiety/depression led to my start as a musical theater writer. It was my desire to write a show that centered around mental illness and its relation to pharmaceutical drugs. The success of “Misty Sharon’s Asylum”, led to meeting writer/lyricist Eric C. Jones. Together. We’ve created 5 musicals. One of our shows (White Mans Burden) was a 1st place recipient of The National Association of Musical Theater 15 minute musical challenge in 2020. Also, Misty Sharon the musical launched a collaboration with songwriter/producer Keke Smith. Together, we formed Keke & Josh Music LLC where we make music for all genres. In addition to Eric and Keke, I’m an active member of Spiritual Therapy, an inspirational band in Detroit Mi. I use my writing gift anyway I can! My uniqueness as an artist makes me stand out among the rest. I am proud to say I’m most proud of overcoming my fears and insecurities as an artist, since most of our work is always under a grain of scrutiny. Overall, I make music from the heart!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Time is of the essence when it comes to being creative artist. No creatives don’t realize the amount of time, effort, and dedication it takes to develop a project. Just because we may not benefit financially from our work, we’re still working toward our goal toward success! This may cause conflict with family/friends who don’t value creativity as a way of life! So, it’s important to protect our peace at all cost due to our highest form of expression happens when we let ourselves be free!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My senior year of high school is where I experienced several episodes of anxiety, so much so, it affected my artistic abilities. Thoughts such as, “ Am I good enough”? “ “Will I become to good that others would become jealous and cause me harm?” “ AmI jealous hearted toward other creatives?”, made performing and composing a chore rather than a joy. Since then, I’ve garnered coping skills that aid in this area of my life. Today, I am motivated more than ever to make my dreams a reality.
