We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well we really are sugar heads, always looking for a good treat, I’m always looking for a new milkshakes cause it’s one of my favorite desserts but where we live in Brunswick you can’t really get a milkshake anywhere so one day we just decided to make our own but not just a milkshake a shake that has everything you want in a dessert all in one place. We decided to make Shake It Up Milkshakes Bar a mobile food truck that will go around and Shake It Up with everyone in our community. We knew we had something when I started our social media page and instantly got invited to all the major events in our city and had not even made a shake for the public yet. Once we got in a truck (that we share with a restaurant) and actually got some shake in peoples hands, it was no question our community really wanted and needed something refreshing and exciting like this! We can’t wait to Shake It Up with everyone and see everyone’s reactions when that hand reaches out the food truck window
Joshua , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a singer/songwriter out of Brunswick Ga, being in the music industry i know what it’s like to have to build something from the ground up and try to appeal to a audience that wants your product. Jumping from music to the food industry is very different but I’ve worked in the food industry and customer service my whole life while trying to pursue my music goals, so I understand the ins and out. Shake it up is something I can leave to my community as a staple, my daughter can tell people “my daddy and mommy brought the first milkshake bar to Brunswick” we did it cause we wanted people to find what we were looking for. I’m so proud that everyone has shown us they really wanted it and are so happy we are doing it! That makes it worth all the stress and struggle getting started! Our Shake It Up family want to see our logo on a truck and we plan to bring that!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
So we share a food truck at the moment with a very generous local restaurant, we are so grateful for them, but our schedule might get crossed at times, but we never let that stop us. A day when the truck got doubled booked we were supposed to do an event at the hospital, we had no truck. So we quickly figured out, between us and the hospital director, how to still get these overwhelming delicious milkshake to our wonderful healthcare workers. By setting up in the inside of a nursing wing with our freezer and equipment we were still able to Shake It Up for CNA week with no food truck and got an amazing response!
How’d you meet your business partner?
My cofounder is my fiancé and mother of my first and only child we have known each other since high school. We both are pretty independent people and have always wanted to branch out and start our own business but didn’t know what we wanted to do then we saw the response from a post of a milkshake she made on Instagram and knew that was the business we wanted to start!
