We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Anderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joshua thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
The story of RenovaSmiles began when Eliana and I met in dental school in Perú. What started as a friendship quickly turned into something deeper — we began dating in 2005 and got married in 2007. That same year, I moved to Connecticut after being accepted into the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at the UConn School of Dental Medicine. A year later, Eliana joined me there and started her own journey in the same program.
In 2008, I became a fellow in the AEGD program, and a year later, Eliana followed in the same path. In 2010, I was honored to become a Clinical Instructor at UConn, a role that allowed me to share my passion for dentistry with the next generation of dentists. That same year, our first child, Nicholas, was born — a blessing that brought even more purpose to everything we were building.
As 2011 approached, Eliana and I decided it was time for a new adventure, so we moved to Virginia. I began working in private practice, while Eliana joined a Community Health Center, where she dedicated herself to caring for underserved families.
In 2014, we took a big leap of faith and opened the first RenovaSmiles in Falls Church, Virginia. The name RenovaSmiles came from our shared love for dentistry and our desire to help people renew their smiles — and their confidence. That same year, our family grew again when our second son, Ian, was born.
With the support of our amazing patients and team, our practice began to grow. In 2016, we opened our second location in Woodbridge, right around the time our first daughter, Ivana, was born. Three years later, in 2019, we expanded again with a third office in Manassas, and that same year we welcomed our fourth child, Aria, into the world.
Even during the challenges of 2020, we continued moving forward and opened our fourth location in Arlington. Most recently, we’ve expanded our RenovaSmiles family to Franconia, and in 2024, we proudly opened our newest and largest location — a from-scratch, state-of-the-art practice in Occoquan–Lake Ridge, Virginia.
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come — from two dental students in Perú dreaming about the future, to building a family and a practice that we’re deeply proud of.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way, it’s this:
Never stop dreaming, and never stop fighting to pursue that dream

Joshua, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey in dentistry began in Perú, where I met my wife, Dr. Eliana Anderson, while we were both in dental school. What started as a shared passion for dentistry turned into a lifelong partnership in both life and career. Together, we dreamed of building something bigger — a dental practice where patients would feel genuinely cared for, understood, and valued.
That dream eventually became RenovaSmiles. Today, with six convenient locations across Falls Church, Woodbridge, Manassas, Arlington, Franconia, and Occoquan (Lake Ridge), our mission is simple: to change the way people feel about going to the dentist.
At the heart of RenovaSmiles is our incredible team — a group of dental professionals who truly believe that exceptional care goes far beyond cleanings and checkups. We understand that visiting the dentist can make many people anxious, so we’ve built our entire practice around comfort, compassion, and outstanding service.
From the moment patients walk through our doors, they’re welcomed by friendly faces and a calm, modern environment designed to help them relax. We also offer pain-free treatments and nitrous oxide sedation, ensuring that even our most nervous patients feel completely at ease.
For us, every patient’s story matters. We take the time to listen, to understand, and to tailor every visit so that each person receives care that’s both effective and personal. Our ultimate goal is for patients to leave not only with healthier smiles but also with a renewed sense of trust and comfort in their dental care.
At RenovaSmiles, we’re not just improving oral health — we’re helping people rediscover the confidence that comes with a great smile.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
To be honest, it’s our genuine care for each patient. As a dentist, I focus not only on providing high-quality treatment but also on creating a comfortable, reassuring experience. I believe patients can truly feel when you prioritize their well-being over anything else, and that trust has been key in building our reputation.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, absolutely. Dentistry may not be a career everyone loves, but it gives you something incredibly meaningful—the chance to restore a patient’s confidence and give them back their smile.
