We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joshua Alvarez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joshua below.
Hi Joshua, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
taking a leap into the art world without any education in art was a risk in itself and somewhat intimidating. Once I was able to put that aside and just jump in headfirst and create work that was an extension of myself, I felt I was doing what I am meant to do and create what is true to me.

Joshua, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Working with wood for a good part of my life, I found a new way to create with wood that felt more like myself. Creating art came about as an idea during the pandemic with wanting the need to create some unique pieces to put around my studio at the time. It all began as a want to create art for my lifeless walls to create work that was an extension of myself influenced by several external factors. The decision to create all black work was not an easy one but I feel that black is the color that speaks to me and compliments my work in the best possible way imaginable. Using a technique that I like to call intuitive design combined with a direct music influence all help create one of kind wood art pieces. First and foremost I create for myself with no plan going into it because it is the most organic way for me to create rather than having set guidelines that make the process and work feel uninspired. Working under the name JJ WOOD is a combination of my name and the medium that I work with that come together to form a passion of mine. My goal is to share my work with as many people as possible and to inspire others to create because I believe we are all artistic in some way and should be given the opportunity to express ourselves.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is being able to express myself through my work since it is not always easy to gather the right words and explain how I am feeling.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to create work that is true to me and want it to feel like it is an extension of myself.
