We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Wei. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Josh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, I’m fortunate to be able to do what I do full-time for a living.
I started in the industry when I was 16, so while I wasn’t able to earn a full-time living starting out, I had the financial shelter from my parents and still being a kid in school. By the time I was 18 or so, I was able to make enough to be self-sustaining.
I found my early success as the music director for Gentle Bones. At that time, he was growing rapidly as an artist and brought me along for the ride.
I always say that one of the most important advantages I had in my career was that I started early. I’d advise everyone to do the same, it’s easier to take risks and be broke while in school than it is as a working adult in the real world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Josh, and I’m 28 this year. I am a record producer, songwriter and a partner at a recording studio called Snakeweed Studios. While I mainly spend my time in Singapore now, I still find myself making trips out to Los Angeles a couple times a year for work.
I work with artists to understand and realise the vision for their music. I’m with them from the conceptualisation stage, though songwriting, production and recording, and all the way to the mix and master.
I’d like to think that what sets me apart from others is my sound and work ethic. I think that artists work with me because they know they will receive the product they’re looking for and that I’ll walk together with them throughout the creative process.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
While it didn’t exist back then for me, I think Mix With The Masters is a great platform for aspiring record producers and songwriters.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The satisfaction or ‘high’ I get from writing a melody that lifts or making a bounce that moves is unparalleled. When the different parts of a song come together and begin to make sense, I feel like I’ve solved the greatest puzzle in the universe. And after all these years, it still feels like the first time.
