We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Vanderwaall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Josh , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
Social Media is such a large category with so many platforms. I currently handle all social media myself and feel like I am excelling on some platforms and completely lacking on others. With ever changing updates to where my focus is on the business, I find myself feeling like I should be doing more in the categories where I see the most return. I try to keep things in perspective and spend more energy on the places that are experiencing the most growth. I have a small team that handles the service side of my business, but I am a one man show currently with content creation and building my presence on YouTube. Much of my focus is primarily on my YouTube channel and growth has been fantastic. Social Media is an incredible source for not only promoting my local business but also for building a completely new income stream based around the content of my industry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started off in the Car Detailing industry almost 18 years ago. Growth in the beginning was slow, but over time I was able to use my down time to learn SEO and other web based marketing strategies. The detail business has grown significantly and we are constantly booked about 10 days in advance. I have hired some staff to help with the influx of new business, but it is difficult when working with high end vehicles. Trying to find staff that will do the same quality of work as me, is very hard since the business is my baby. I have been very lucky to find a few team members that work incredibly hard to provide the best experience for the customer.
Outside of the service aspect of the business, I try to focus my time on building brand online. Creating an online revenue source and promoting products within the industry serves two purposes at once. I am able to align myself and my company as a source of knowledge within the industry which builds online presence as well as promotes the local service side of the business.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started my business on a loan. However, looking back and knowing what I know now, I would have stream lined the business and grown organically without taking on any debt. My YouTube channel is based upon stream lining detailing operations both for business and for the DIYer. I focus on showing people how they can achieve fantastic results without having to go out and buy the most expensive tools and products. I feel that having proper equipment is extremely important, but having the knowledge and processes to get the job done is imperative. In most cases a person with years of experience and good tools is going to outperform someone who is knew to the industry that has the latest and greatest tools. There is no substitute for knowing the tips and tricks to get the best results, and in the world we live in with hours and hours of video available to learn from, you can start a business with much less money.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my YouTube channel has been a bit of a grind. Growth in the beginning was very difficult. They say that getting your first 1,000 subscribers is the most difficult and I would have to agree. Trying to get a video to catch on and get promoted by the algorithm can be very hard in the beginning. You have a limited audience, which translates to limited view time. And click through and view time are what helps the algorithm know what videos to promote. The good thing is each video has its own level of SEO (search engine optimization) that you can use to promote your videos. I’ve used that exact equation to build my channel to a current subscriber base of 60k. Once you figure out what works for your audience, just keep at it and keep your growth steady and organic!
