We recently connected with Josh Teigen and have shared our conversation below.
Josh, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
We thought a lot about our business’s name. In our industry, it is common to tie the business to our family name. Teigen builders, Teigen Homes, etc. That isn’t the route I wanted to go. Our goal is to build something larger than just our name or reputation. And ultimately, what we are working on isn’t about the Teigen’s. So, we looked for a name that embodies the values that we try to instill across our business.
With that in mind, my wife and I chose Hesed Homes to be our company name. We spent our first year of marriage in Colorado. I was going to seminary, pursuing a Master of Divinity degree while working on high-end remodels to pay the bills. During our time there, my wife, Cassie, learned about the word Hesed. It’s a Hebrew word from the Old Testament in the Bible that we would translate as “loving kindness.” The English translation doesn’t fully encapsulate the word’s meaning , though. Hesed is the word used to describe God’s love for us. Sacrificial love. Putting the other person first love. It is also a word used to describe one’s commitment to something or someone. An example from the Bible would be King David’s mighty men and their commitment to follow and serve him.
It sums up what we want to do for both our clients and those who work for us. We want to love our people well, To take care of them by being committed to them and putting them first. We also have the opportunity to create spaces that help other people accomplish that same thing themselves. It is in our home that we have the best opportunity to show Hesed to the family and friends who enter it. So we hope by revitalizing the spaces in our client’s homes they can better love those who enter its doors.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started working in the trades when I was 18 years old. Fresh out of high school, I started pursuing an undergraduate degree in psychology. I knew that it could be difficult to find a job with just that degree after I graduated, so I wanted to work on developing another skill over those couple of years. I started working for any builder or tradesman who would take me on. I worked for multiple builders, an electrician, a plumber, and others over the next four years. As my knowledge and skills improved so did my opportunities. Working on high end homes turned into a vehicle that supported us through my. undergraduate studies, grad school, and moving across the country twice. Eventually, we were led back to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we really started to buckle down on developing a career as a builder. Hesed Homes was started, and we have been servicing West Michigan’s residential construction needs ever since.
Primarily, we focus on high-end remodels. We redo lots of kitchens and bathrooms to create new, beautiful, functional spaces for our clients. Even though that is our focus, we can take care of anything related to the home, so we finish plenty of basements, build decks, and new roofs. If it’s a residential construction project, we can take care of it.
What sets us apart is largely being client centered, having an absolutely phenomenal team, and as organized as possbile so we can deliver a high quality product in a timely manner.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For us, we have spent basically $0.00 on marketing since starting our business. The best clients are just referrals from previous clients whom we did good work for. Our goal is to take care of our people, and they will take care of us by passing our name along to others. Now, years later, that client base has grown exponentially as we get to be more and more people’s “go-to guy” for their construction needs.
This year is our first year really starting to pursue an online presence and do any form of marketing. Even with that, I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to beat the word of mouth method. Good people tend to refer good people.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The best advice I can think of would be to ask the people on your team what motivates them and where are they trying to go in life. Our job as leaders is to help people get to where they are supposed to go. We are very intentional with trying to make sure everyone has the opportunity to grow, that they feel invested in and cared for, and that they are being compensated in a way that matches their worth and their goals.
It isn’t an easy thing to do, but if you can give people what they want and help them take tangible steps forward in life, they will be happy, driven, and actively engaged in whatever it is we are working on at the time.
