We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Sadowski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I feel like we all look back in time and wish we did things earlier on in our lives. For me, the main thing I wish I worked on earlier on would be music. I’ve been singing since I was six, but I unfortunately didn’t pick up any instruments. At 23 I’m just now getting comfortable on the piano, and trying to learn more music production. When you’re younger it’s so much easier to have an extra 6 hours in your day over the summer to practice, but being an adult comes with a calendar, taxes, bills to pay, and a lot of sleep deprivation haha. I will say that I’m glad that I preoccupied myself with other hobbies, like social media. I started making videos when I was 15, and if I never did that, who knows if I’d be in the position I’m in today. I’m also now a student at LAAMP music, which I’m really excited for. There are things that I wish I started earlier on, but better now than never!
Josh, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
To start things off, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Josh Sadowski, and I was born in Maryland. I call many different states home; as I moved around quite a lot as a kid. I come from a Latino American household, and thankfully my mom taught me Spanish growing up. I’m thankfully still fluent to this day. I was also homeschool pretty much my entire life. Being homeschooled gave me flexibility with my time, and allowed me to explore my creative interests. I started making singing and comedy videos on musically for fun when I was 15, and then when I was 18 I started to take it more seriously. I started posting comedy skits with different characters like “Mama Penny” and that’s when my content began to reach millions of viewers online. When I turned 19 i decided to check out LA and see what it had to offer. Due to COVID I wasn’t able to move here full time, and I had to leave within a few months of arriving. While in lock down, I continued to make content which is when I really started to grow on Tiktok and YouTube. I started a boutique talent management firm, and I represented talent for about two years while I was making content. We worked with brands like chipotle, Adobe, Invisalign, Flighthouse, and many others. In 2021 I decided to focus more on my artist career and moved to LA.
Over the past couple years I’ve been extremely blessed to experience all the amazing opportunities LA has to offer. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some really well known brands, and I continue to make content while I network and work on my music. I’ve been building out my artist project over the past year, and I’m looking to release my first single by the end of the year. I also recently got accepted into LAAMP which is a music academy for artists, songwriters, and producers located in Santa Monica. I’m very excited to see how this next chapter of my life turns out. Also a fun fact about me: Before I Moved to LA full time, I lived in Branson Missouri. Our log cabin was located on a doomsday prepper community… I know, very random! My parents were really into that sort of thing.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My parents struggled financially, and it would become very stressful at times while growing up.
When I started making videos, all I had was my iPhone which I had saved up 400 dollars to buy so I could listen to music and make videos. I had very few creative outlets at the time since I was homeschooled. Social media was the first thing that allowed me to not only express myself creatively, but also connect with others that had similar interests. I made videos everyday and worked relentlessly so I could be financially independent, and move out to LA. It was very difficult at first, but I’m thankful that I never gave up. I also grew up in a very religious household and I was closeted almost my entire life. I came out to my parents last year, and I’ve felt our relationship become stronger now that I can be more open with them. I’m thankful that social media has not only allowed me to become financially independent, but also to have such a supportive community around me. I’m extremely grateful to have so many supportive and loving people around me.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
when I have a creative video idea come to mind, there’s so much satisfaction in being able to express myself.. It brings me so much joy when I’m able to put something together in a unique and original way. When I have music sessions and I’m doing a melody pass on a chord progression, there’s such a euphoric feeling that comes over you when something just feels right. Sometimes lyrics will just start to flow out as your singing. It almost feels like a spiritual experience some times. I find so much joy in not only being able to express myself creatively, but also being able to work with other creatives. I love people, and being in this industry allows me to connect with so many others through my creativity.
