We recently connected with Josh Rabalais and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When it comes to why I did what I do, it really comes down to service. I knew I wanted to help people, and the jobs I’ve had in my life have always included some aspect of service to the community. I’m a very faith based person, and so I know God’s plan put me exactly where I needed to be. At the time I was teaching, and while I loved it, it wasn’t fully what I wanted to do. I remember I did searching like most of us did during that time, and I revisited a thought I had as a child….to go to law school. So there I was, sitting take the LSAT online version they offered in my rent house, and I remember it came to me. I looked at the start of the next section and heard that voice say “I REALLY don’t want to be doing this.” In that moment of dread I began to think “Why is that what I’m feeling”. I heard and felt real estate but thought that couldn’t possibly be it. Sure enough it kept coming back, and about two days later after heavy thinking I told her “I’m going to do this.” And then boom. I knocked out my license pre-requisites and final test in a month and a half, which I later found out is an incredibly short time. I knew what I wanted, and I haven’t stopped since. I knew this is what I was destined to do, and I try to make sure every client not just knows that because I said it, but feels it through my actions.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well since in the previous question I ended up telling how I got into this career, I will talk more about my brand of business. I am a hard worker, but also a smart worker. If it came to what I am most proud of it’s being able to understand my clients. One of the first questions I always ask is not just about what they desire in a house, but what they desire in life. It really helps me to understand what they’re looking for. Another aspect that I’m proud of and want people to know is that I have BEEN THERE. Every question, every twist in the road, every frustrating moment, and every joyous one I have walked in my client’s shoes. I pride myself on being the problem solver not just during a sale, but after. I’ve discussed pricing with a client before, and I’ve worked in the garden of a client because no one else would or could. I work hard, and I’m not just someone that’s transactional. I treat my clients the way I would want to be treated.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
To me contact is key with my clients. I’m not in the business of selling houses, I’m in the business of helping people. I try to reach out to my clients at the very least once a month, but not to talk sales or houses. Simply to check in and see how everyone is doing. I want to know what’s going on in my clients’ lives not just how they impact me. For example, one of my clients dogs was sadly very sick with cancer. While doing this interview at first she called my wife and I to tell us that he wasn’t doing well and needed to go to the vet. At 9:30 at night I drive to her house to help her get him into the car to get to the vet. That to me is what it’s about. I could sell 100 houses or 1, but if I can make an impact on people, that to me is a win.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Talk about FATE! So before I even thought about real estate my wife and I were looking for a rent house. My wife was running late to our showing, and I had to use the bathroom as I had been working all day. I decided that I was just going to stop at a new build office to use it. After 15 minutes of talking, the lady working there told me about Lisa Kurrass and that I had to meet her to help me. So my wife and I called her and her energy lit up the room even though she wasn’t even with us. She was this big, sweet personality and it was infectious. We hadn’t kept in too much contact until 3 years later when I approach her that I’m doing real estate and taking my test. After I passed she called me in and we had the best conversation, and I asked to join her brokerage. And the rest, as they say, is history.
