We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Plasse a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Josh , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Probably the last film I just produced & acted in! It’s titled Man’s Son, and while everything did not go perfectly (what ever does)? I learned invaluable experience along the way. I say it’s my most meaningful because it’s the first film my production company has personally spearheaded, and I was involved in every step of the process since inception. Seeing something that originally began as a concept turn into a script, than an actual film was truly remarkable in it’s own, but being a part of the fundraising, and years of collaboration to get anyone’s support in the first place is what truly stuck out about this one. People often forget this is show business, not just show.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hmm, well my start in the industry was an interesting one. I originally went to school for homeland security and criminal justice, because i grew up in a military family back east. Interestingly enough, during training, i found myself much too serious about life, and decided I’d try an acting class to get out of my shell!
That class led to a true passion, and ultimately, my calling. It was a tough decision, but I felt in my heart that I could make a bigger difference in entertainment than I could in most other industries, which is absolutely my goal to this day. Hollywood has such an influence on modern culture, and I’d love to be a part of that influence.
I started booking a lot of work as an actor, but nothing that really skyrocketed me just yet. Given my drive and love of all aspects related to film, I decided to put my work ethic to good use and start my own production company. With all of the technology at hand these days, it’ so much easier than ever to make content. That said, you’ll still need good partners, and a borderline crazy passion, as the market is insanely saturated. That’s where I am today, acting is my core passion, and primary source of revenue, but I’m really starting to enjoy crafting projects from the very beginning! This is also an amazing way to maintain creative say and make sure our messages get out!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. For me, I’d love to see more meaningful content make a comeback. Right now, we’re seeing the same concepts over and over again, and unfortunately, nothing seems to have any real purpose. From where I’m standing, modern cinema is just the flavor of the week. So first and foremost, I sleep well knowing there is an actual, and tangible goal of putting content that matters back into the world. If we can make even one person better for having seen our work, we’ve done a great job.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Most definitely. One of the most revelatory nights of my entire life was on the Santa Monica beach. It’s a bit of a crazy story, but I was at a pretty tough crossroads in my life, and was in desperate need of answers. I decided to take a long walk by myself and pray over my situation. I walked the beach for nearly seven hours that night trying to figure out if I was indeed on the right path, and if I was indeed in the right industry. Ultimately, I had a life altering spiritual experience, and felt a renewed peace the likes of which I had never thought possible. When I got home that night, my agent called me to inform me that I had just booked Grey’s Anatomy. Not a game changer per-say, but the tangible evidence to support my night.
