We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Overton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Josh, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I would say advertising yourself and your skills. For instance your skills as a musician or mixing engineer Person A could find really desirable, but on the other hand Person B might look at all those factors and say, “You’re just not what I’m exactly looking for.” And you have to find a way to be okay with it because there are plenty of Person A’s in the world and that’s the silver lining thought behind that.
The other struggle is first coming to terms with what YOU specifically are producing and comparing it to what is deemed “industry standard” or “industry worthy.” If it is, or you believe it is, then you have to be okay with putting yourself out there and that can be a struggle due to just how much power rejection has. At the end of the day though, if you believe in what you are producing, then go for it, but don’t be afraid of criticism and helpful hints.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the music industry after performing at my local high school Battle of the Bands in my senior year of high school. After that I understood I wanted to be part of that industry in some capacity, because at the end of the day it’s music, and it’s meant to be fun or a form of expression.
I personally am a guitarist and am a founding and full time member in the Nashville based Hard Rock/Metalcore band Hollow Wake. I also am a mixing & mastering engineer and songwriter & producer. I created my own studio in my own home and named it Grey Space Recording Studios to allow for the ability to create industry accepted songs and so far it’s been great!
The problems I solve are purely creative and just making a piece of art sound good for the artist/client.
I personally think what sets me a part is that I come from a background that appreciates a lot of music. I just enjoy good songwriting so I love being a part of a project that has good songwriting. Granted there are some genres I shy away from because they aren’t something I feel I’m confident enough producing, but that’s just preference.
I think I’m most proud of is that recently a former client I had told me that a really famous (to me anyway) mixing engineer who has Grammy nominated songs recognized my name. That was pretty cool. The other is that Nada Recording Studios’ John Naclerio (who has worked on some of the most amazing records) told me that a mix I sent him for master was really good. I think I was riding a high from that for like a week and gave me just a huge boost in my confidence and ability to do this stuff and what I produce.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Oh gosh 1000% percent Nail-The-Mix. That was a game changer for me and let me put my own spin on actual full songs that are out in the world getting millions of streams. I would also say that learning to ask for advice and not be afraid of that is a big one. People aren’t judging. They are helping!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Not really, just create songs I enjoy or I know people would enjoy. At the end of the day I do this for me. But if other people want me to do this for them, then we talk about it!
