We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh McBride. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Alright, Josh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
When I was 13, I had my barmitzvah like many Jewish boys have. While it was a great time, I was enamored with the entertainment ability of the DJ/MC/Dancers being able to command the room, while making everyone have a great time. Shortly after that I wanted to do the same thing. At nearly 15 years old, I started my own DJ business. I would get hired from word of mouth, often times, my parents would drop me off to dj a birthday party or small event. When I turned 16, I begged the local Top 40 radio station, Kiss 108 (Boston if you know you know) to let me work there as an intern as I was fascinated with music, and entertainment. I got the gig for a summer into the fall, and was in love with radio. Soon after, I attended college where I interned at Entertainment Tonight in NYC, and spent the summer there. One day, the host of the show said “Josh, why dont you come up here and read the prompter and we will hit record?” The rest is history. I fell in love with hosting, using inflection to tell a story, keeping my energy up so that whoever watched would be engaged… Now I am a full time host and still love every second of it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I work as full time TV Personality & Entertainment/Lifestyle Expert. I host and contribute to national and regional shows around the country giving entertainment/pop culture insight and as a lifestyle expert I recommend different products/brands for let’s say “Father’s Day Gifts for Every Kind of Dad” or “Stocking Stuffers Under $100.” I have worked on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Sherri Shepherd, The Talk, Wendy Williams, Nick Cannon Show, and more!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I started hosting, I always made sure I had an income stream to support my dream of being a full time paid host. This was hard. When I moved to NYC when I was about 23 years old, I told myself “make hosting work. Do this as a full time job.” Unfortunately, my finances didn’t agree.
However, I knew I could practice hosting if I got a job in field marketing, after all that was what my major was in as well. For years, I got paid to pass out Popchips, or cut Kind Bars in Whole Foods asking people if they wanted samples.
At the same time though, I was applying to every hosting job I saw on Craigslist, NYCastings, etc. even if there was no pay. Years later, I had built up so much footage and content of myself hosting, I finally transitioned into hosting full time and didn’t have to work in marketing any longer.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being real is the most important thing you can do as a brand, business owner, and overall person. If you believe in your product, share that. Use that passion to excel in your career. I can always tell who doesn’t actually believe in what they are selling as it doesn’t come across authentic.
Be YOU! Stop trying to be like everyone else. Dont hide the uniqueness of you or your product.
