We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Kanterowitsch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Josh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started Pacific Pro Roofing because I wanted to continue my dad’s legacy and help people in need, just like my dad did. Growing up, I saw how much pride he took in his work and how he went out of his way to help those who couldn’t afford a new roof. That left a big impression on me. The time I spent working with him made me love the craft, and my military experience taught me how to lead and solve problems. When I decided to start my own business, it was driven by a passion for building, a deep respect for my dad’s work, and a strong desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. That’s what keeps me going and what makes this business meaningful to me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in Los Angeles, the son of a hardworking roofer and a talented artist. When I was just two years old, my mom and I moved out of the country. where I grew up surrounded by her art. My childhood was filled with the smell of paint and the sight of vibrant canvases. But every summer, I would fly back to Los Angeles to spend time with my dad. Those summers were special, I’d go with him to roofing jobs, learning how to lay shingles, measure angles, and use tools. I loved the work, the satisfaction of seeing a roof completed, knowing it would protect a family.
Over time, I realized how much my dad’s work meant to him and how his generosity touched the lives of those who couldn’t afford a new roof. His dedication inspired me, and I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps.
After high school, I served as an Infantry Lieutenant. The military taught me leadership, discipline, and how to handle pressure. But even during those years, my dream was to return to Los Angeles and continue my dad’s legacy.
When my military service ended, I knew it was time. With my dad’s support, I moved back to Los Angeles and opened Pacific Pro Roofing. I brought everything I had learned with me my mom’s artistic eye, my dad’s roofing skills, and the leadership experience from the military. I wanted to create a company that was more than just about roofs. I wanted to help people, just like my dad did.
Today, Pacific Pro Roofing is one of the top roofing companies in Los Angeles. We’re known for our quality work, but what I’m most proud of is our commitment to the community. Every day, I’m grateful to continue my dad’s legacy, using the skills and values he and my mom instilled in me to build something that lasts.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’m sharing my company’s secret with you all… There’s a saying I always remind my team of in every meeting:
“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”
I believe that the only way to grow your clientele is to genuinely want to help the people you work with before thinking about what you’ll get out of it. I train my customer service teams, sales teams, and crews with this same principle because once the customer sees that you truly care and are there for their service, it not only makes the construction project more enjoyable, but it also brings in more customers and returning clients.

Any advice for managing a team?
My advice is to encourage the teams to care for the business and each other almost as much as you care about the business and them. Assign teams managers and give the teams responsibilities so that coming to work every day becomes more than just another 9-to-5 job for them. Treat them with respect, and ensure a happy environment both in the field and in the office.
Once people care about the business as if it’s their own, that’s when you get a high-morale, high-efficiency team.
