Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Josh Harrington . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Josh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It took me a lot of years to build up the courage to do what I do on stage. To just be me, in my own skin. The only thing to ever stand in my way was myself. Most of us are our own worst critics, and I think that’s what makes it tough when you are presenting your art to the world. Whether it’s a song or a painting. Maybe you’re an interior designer or do woodworking. It’s all art and if you aren’t personally confident about it, then how can you wholeheartedly put it out there? Always wondering and worried about who is going to like it or not… For me that confidence came later and not caring about what other people think really helped with that. Going with my gut and staying true to myself. I think that’s how you become a great artist. I wish I would have told myself that earlier in life, but it has made me who I am today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in Elkhart, Indiana for most of my childhood. Playing sports with the kids in the neighborhood and staying out late. When you heard dad’s whistle, you’d better get heading towards the house! Or else haha!! He and my uncle were always in bands while I was growing up, so I had Ozzy Osbourne and Rush in my ears since I was in a car seat. I also fished alot with my dad and his friends who were also rockers so I think that’s where the seed was planted. It wasn’t until I turned 30 when I finally joined a band. For years I’d go out with friends doing karaoke and just having fun. After a couple beers I thought I’d get the courage to sing one but it was mostly them singing me up for songs unannounced to me lol They constantly pushed me to do something bigger. So I joined a cover band. We had an absolute blast and it didn’t take long for me to know what I wanted to do for a living. Singing is my passion. The writing process was difficult at first but the pieces eventually started to come together. It took a long time but I can proudly say that I love the music we put out. I get so much joy when someone tells me how much they can relate to something I’ve written. It’s from he heart. There’s no better feeling and I think that sets us apart from many who may write for other reasons. If I can touch just one person with my music, save one person from suicide or substance abuse, help heal and make listeners feel heard, then I will die a happy man.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The stuff I love the most is seeing the smiles and hearing the stories of all the people that I get to call fans. Creating that bond as if you knew each other all those years. I know what my favorite songs do to me. So to think about how my music does that to them is extremely rewarding.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Like, share, subscribe right!?! Haha No, in all seriousness, just support in any form. Whether it’s a like or share or even word of mouth. I think we need to stop competing against each other as a society. I want to see people succeed even when I’m failing. Go to a local show, take a pottery class, buy your friends painting. You just might be the one that makes up an artist’s mind for them! You might also save a life!
