We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Josh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
A few years back, I recorded, edited, and published a full drum loop/sample pack every single day for 365 days- the Permanent Record Drum Sample Library.
I had felt compelled to archive my musical autobiography in a library of sorts but couldn’t seem to find the methodology for how to achieve this task. Forcing myself to create something on a daily basis was the most creative and personal challenge I could have ever dreamed of.
Josh , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been creating music with drums for over 25 years. You can hear my work with artists such as Infradig, Josh Garrels, The Distribution and Summer Dregs. In 2016-2017I created the Permanent Record drum sample library; a 365 day long discipline of creating and publishing a new drum loop pack everyday for one year.
For the past 3 years, I’ve been diving deep into the world of sensory percussion and fusion of midi/dmx lighting and video triggering in live performance. My current creative manifestation infatuation is the fusion of art and technology most evidenced by my Forest Illumination installments. I climb into trees and affix hundreds of feet of LED strips. Once back on the ground, I use my drums and technology to make the forest dance.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Though somewhat cliche, any time that I know definitively that something I have created has connected to another human being, the reward is immense. Creative endeavors are notoriously selfish and personal connection and connection cannot be over-emphasized.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Since I began my Permanent Record Drum Library, I worked extremely hard to cultivate a thriving social media presence. Certainly, there have been some redeeming connections and opportunities that arose out of this effort to curate myself and my work. At this point in time, however, I see the majority of social media as almost a detriment to true creative effort. There is a perpetual drive to create for an audience rather than a convicted purpose. This is a problem. I see the emphasis on social media as a necessary evil that must be taken in stride and kept in check, especially if one is to create with abandon and principle.
