We were lucky to catch up with Josh Goldstein recently and have shared our conversation below.
Josh , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Ultimately what I do encompasses multiple thing. I would say I learned how to play guitar when I was 10 but that’s an ongoing process of learning. After being in and out of bands for the better part of 20 years after learning how to play, I realized that there was more to the music business than just playing songs. I had to learn how to manage time, people, finances, events, and A LOT more! It is a constant process of growth and learning when managing a band and I am always networking and learning from others in the industry. Looking back I would have just started expanding my network much earlier. There’s no real way to “speed up” the process of learning this business. Only thing you can do is start learning it from as many reliable people as early as possible.

Josh , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I play guitar in a band called IN THE VARIANT. We started playing together about 10 years ago. I started playing music with one of my best friends Josh Somers. We ended up connecting with a lot of musicians over the years but him and our drummer, Jason Deliganis, have been the constants. We play a style most akin to rock and heavy metal. We just started working with a new front woman last summer named Monica Rivas who is absolutely INCREDIBLE. Talk about the real deal. What sets us apart is our sound. We all come from such different musical influences and backgrounds that the sound we synthesize together is a wonderful mix of all of us.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Go to your friends shows, buy their art, if you can’t, then just help share their content. A little if that goes A LONG way.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
COVID. Throughout the lockdowns many bands came and went. We stayed. We had to overcome not having any income from live shows to keep our rent for our practice studio paid. We had to endure weeks to months at a time of not being able to practice in person. Through it all we remained together (though physically apart). Kept writing, kept rehearsing. Kept looking for the missing piece we found in Monica. And now, we’re back and stronger than ever and ready to show you all what we’ve been working on. We’re getting ready to release new videos and singles in the coming months.
