We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Goldman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Josh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
A love for the craft will begin your journey, but continuing to follow the path requires repetition, accepting failure, and rekindling joy. I think everyone starts a creative pursuit because its a fun hobby and, if you experience success with your creative endeavors, you feel empowered to keep going. There will be a point, though, when the hobby becomes more of a burden and not everything you do or create will be as fun as when it was at first. I began DJ’ing in my bedroom, jamming in my headphones and occasionally annoying my roommate. I then transitioned to playing friends house parties, then events looking for a free DJ on Craigslist. I always had a blast playing for people who knew me and wanted to dance. It got a lot harder when I began playing paying clients, and not every event was a fun as I wanted it to be. I learned from this struggle and began to power through events more easily – recognizing that its a job that has ups and downs like any other career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been making mixtapes and dancing in my bedroom since I was six years old. Whether it was gettin’ down with James Brown, air guitaring to Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin, or chilling out with Bob Marley, I’ve always had an appreciation for an extremely wide variety of music.
As tapes fell by the wayside and were replaced with CD’s, I began making mix CD’s for friends and family and, as my CD collection grew, my musical horizons began to widen and encompass genres such as Jazz, Country, Nu-Disco, Electronic Dance Music, Afropop, and many others.
DJ G Events began as a way for me to share my ranging taste in music with others, and I began mixing tracks at house parties throughout the D.C. area. House parties led to birthday parties, which led to proms, 50th wedding anniversaries, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and so on.
Since I started DJ G Events in 2010, I’ve played over 90 events in the Washington, D.C. area and have tailored music for diverse crowds from all backgrounds and age ranges. This sort of experience has enabled me to connect with any audience and allows me to guarantee that your guests will simply love the music at your next event.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Customer service is key, and even though people can be ridiculous, you need to act with grace and humility. Meet the client where they want to be, and don’t take every client that comes your way if you think they will be too much of a hassle.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Perhaps the future, perhaps a flash in the pan. I’m no expert, but be careful.
