We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Edwards. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.
Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job
I think the best lesson I’ve learned from past work experience is just to work hard. I started working a paper route when I was 8 years old and haven’t stopped working since. I’ve worked in food, at the airport, loading boxes in truck, as a teacher, in the army, in hospitals, and owning my own business. Often more than one job at once and always more than a “standard” 40 hours per week. I don’t think that’s rare these days anymore, but especially as a teacher I saw it as a declining ideal for those coming up which I think is unfortunate. I think in most scenarios, success takes work. Hard work. Constant work. Willing to put in extra hours and willing to sacrifice. Sometimes you’ll succeed and sometimes you’ll fail. What makes the difference is getting up every time, brushing the dust off, and carrying on with full effort the next time around. I’m thankful my family has been supportive of all my ventures and trying my sometimes crazy and life-changing ideas, like joining the army at 30.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Coming out of the army and losing my army insurance, I needed to find something to supplement my income. I saw a need for delivering things like gravel, compost, topsoil, etc. What I offer to my customers that sets me apart is that I’m able to deliver quicker, more precisely, and often cheaper than my competition. I am often able to deliver same day. I specialize in precision dumping and can get my equipment into places that larger companies can’t or won’t. As long as it’s accessible, I can get it there. I save my customers countless hours and energy by dropping their products closer than anyone else. I’m constantly told how grateful people are that they don’t have to move multiple tons of rocks long distances because I can put it right where they need it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Having been doing this quite a while now, I’m grateful to say that a lot of my customer come from previous business. Either past customers themselves coming back to me when they need something else, or referrals from past customers. It gives me a boost of confidence that I must be doing something right if people are calling me again or passing along my info when their friends and family need something I offer. I always try to go above and beyond for my customers and it’s nice to see that those efforts don’t go unnoticed.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I joined the army at 30. I was teaching at the time and loving the job, but not the paycheck. I had to make a big change in order to take care of my family. It was a difficult decision to leave my job, life, and especially my family to go into the service, and I was scared to do it. Between basic training and AIT, I was gone for 13 months, away from my family, in a completely new life away from everything and everyone I knew. I went from being in charge of 240 students to being surrounded by a bunch of 18-year-old whose decisions were affecting my daily life in every aspect. It was definitely the most difficult year of my life, and at times I wasn’t sure I could get through it, but through every struggle, I just kept my family as my focus as my “why” and was able to excel when I needed to.
