We recently connected with Josh Dikken Alexis Doan and have shared our conversation below.
Josh Dikken, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
For us, making a living off of creative work is about seeing needs and coming up with creative solutions, rather than just wanting to do our own creative endeavors. Creativity as a hobby is wonderful, but creativity as a job can be just as exciting when reframed (avoiding the classic, your hobby becomes your job and now you hate it trope).
This process focused approach helps with burnout, and helps us create the best solutions for our clients, who benefit directly. THEN… they pay us. It’s a beautiful thing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We (Alexis & Josh) entered video production from a marketing background. We wanted to do the fun (creative) part of the job, and so we jumped into freelance to ~chase our dreams~
Our strengths come from understanding the situations we’re tasked with, and having the equipment and expertise to absolutely freaking nail it.
We’re proud of running a creative company that people love working with. We’ve become friends with our clients and we get frequent reviews about set and the process as a whole being a blast!

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Live cheap. Neither of us have had a car payment, neither of us spend money we don’t have in a checking account, and both of us have roommates and cheap rent.
Every dollar you earn in the beginning is more time to make the dream sustainable. Reducing how much money you need to live is the best enabler to starting your career.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Having control over our own time, having creative problems to solve, and meeting and working with fascinating people.
Video production absolutely rulez.
