We recently connected with Josh Chen and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Josh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The Lotus Dancefloor series holds a special place in my heart. After arriving in New York, my journey into self-discovery and memory began. In this melting pot of cultures and identities, I often pondered, “Which version of me is truly authentic?” This thought led me to express my evolving identity through these images. Gradually, I understood that my identity and Asianness weren’t about making a choice; they were about natural inclination and direction. The lotus flower became a metaphor for my consciousness – blooming wherever I am. Though I clung to my origins, my move to New York transformed me. This transformation was one of growth. The unfolding of the lotus might have altered, but it remained a true representation of me – my Asianness and identity revitalized. Each image in this series resonates with my experiences, portraying a disco ball symbolizing new life that shines as the sun. As the settings in the images moved from Times Square, where I first stepped into New York, to my apartment, the lotus flowers on the disco ball multiplied. This symbolizes a fusion and symbiosis, as well as the amalgamation and harmony of my various selves coexisting.
Josh, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Chinese artist with an INFJ personality, currently in my second year of the Master’s program in Integrated Design & Media at NYU. My artistic approach leans towards the unconventional. My creations primarily involve physical installations, videos, and images, drawing inspiration from pop culture, nature, and the supernatural. My strengths lie in my inventive flair and aesthetic discernment. I revel in the process of mixing diverse elements, eagerly anticipating the new sparks they might ignite. My distinct personal viewpoint distinguishes me in the art world. Art has been a part of my life since childhood, enriched by experiences with the flute and sketching, which have honed my artistic taste. Despite challenges and real-life obstacles, I finally got in to the realm at my master program. I am grateful for never giving up, and I now feel authentically aligned with my true self. I extend my thanks to everyone who supported me on this extensive journey. Currently, I am conceptualizing my thesis on cultural connectedness, planning to fuse Chinoiserie with various myths to create an immersive fantasy experience.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At present, my most objective goal is to have the opportunity of art residence or solo exhibition.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The sense of conviction is profoundly rewarding for an artist or creative because it embodies the essence of true artistic expression. This sense of faith comes from each person’s constant stripping and reshaping of himself. When creating from a place of deep conviction, an artist not only aligns with their authentic self but also transcends the superficial layers of creativity. This alignment fosters a unique voice and vision, enabling the artist to produce work that is not only original but also deeply resonant with their values and beliefs.
