We were lucky to catch up with Josh And Lindsey Mullins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Josh and Lindsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner is one of the most rewarding and challenging things we’ve ever done. There’s a deep sense of fulfillment in creating something of our own—building relationships with incredible people/couples, documenting love stories, and knowing that our work will be cherished for generations. The freedom and creativity that come with running our own photography business makes us incredibly happy.
We both had “normal” 9-5 jobs for many years and found it very difficult to live fulfilled lives. We always had to live according to someone else’s timeframe. And we’d be lying if we said we never thought about going back to those “regular jobs”—ones with a steady paychecks!
Yes, business ownership comes with its own pressures and uncertainties, but the trade-off is doing something that deeply matters to us. Instead of working for someone else’s dream, we’re building our own.
So while the thought of a “regular job” crosses our minds from time to time, the conclusion is always the same: We wouldn’t trade this for anything. The long nights, the hard work, the creative challenges—it’s all worth it because we love what we do and the people we get to do it for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We’re a husband-and-wife photography team based in St. Louis, and we’re all about capturing real, beautiful, joy-filled moments. Whether it’s weddings, couples, senior portraits, or family sessions, our goal is simple: document your story in a way that feels natural, fun, and totally you. you can view our work on our website: joshandlindseyphoto.com
How We Got Here
Josh has been a storyteller from the start—he graduated from Webster University in 2011 with Magna Cum Laude and Department Honors in Film Production, plus a minor in screenwriting (because, clearly, he loves a good story). He even won some fancy awards for his documentary Hammond’s Books (which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyBagUTwG4A&t=3s). His love for photography started with street photography—roaming the streets of St. Louis, camera in hand, capturing everyday life.
Lindsey, on the other hand, has had a few different career paths, but one thing has always stayed the same—she loves making people feel amazing. Whether it’s through photography or just bringing good vibes to any situation, she’s all about making sure people feel comfortable and confident.
We met through a mutual friend at church, and what started as a fun friendship quickly turned into something more. We launched Josh & Lindsey Photo in 2020, and in 2022, we officially tied the knot! (Yep, we totally took our own wedding photos. Kidding!)
What We Do & Why We Love It
We photograph weddings, couples, seniors, and families, and honestly, we’re just big fans of people. Weddings are especially fun for us because we get to capture all the little in-between moments—the laughs, the happy tears, the epic dance moves. Senior sessions let us get super creative with lighting (Josh’s film background definitely comes into play here), and family sessions? They’re just full of pure, chaotic joy—and we love every second of it.
What Makes Us Different?
We like to think of ourselves as more than just photographers—we’re your hype team, your honorary extra bridesmaid/groomsman, and your personal paparazzi (in the best way possible, of course). We know being in front of a camera can feel awkward, so we make sure every session is relaxed, fun, and full of laughter.
What We’re Most Proud Of
Hands down, the relationships we’ve built along the way. So many of our couples and families have become lifelong friends, and nothing makes us happier than when a past wedding client comes back for family photos years later. That trust means everything to us.
What We Want You to Know
If you’re looking for photographers who will not only capture your story beautifully but also make the experience fun, easy, and stress-free, we’d love to chat! Whether you’re planning a wedding, celebrating a milestone, or just want some amazing photos of you and your favorite people, we’re here for it all.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
While working at his video production 9-5 job, Josh was able to save up a good bit of money to purchase cameras, lenses and a computer to get started. Not everything needed to be brand new either, there are plenty of places out there like Ebay and Facebook Marketplace where you can buy nearly new equipment for a lesser cost – gotta be a deal hunter!
And there isn’t any overhead for us since we are the only employees. We do all the work, so we keep all the revenue.
If have a good eye for photography and own a decent camera, good editing software and willing to be your own boss, it’s really not the difficult.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
We would have to say advertising on The Knot and WeddingWire. It is definitely a little pricey to be on their platform, but pays itself off after a couple weddings. We are currently trying to improve our game with the Google algorithm, which is a job in itself, but we have noticed a tiny spike in people who said they found on there; which is great to hear and means we are headed in the right direction!
