We were lucky to catch up with Josetta Monk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Josetta, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning the craft of acting is ongoing. When I first started out I was VERY naive and as I continue to blossom in this industry, I have quickly realized that I am and will be a forever student, constantly learning and evolving…and that’s ok, it is relative to the process. Like most cliche stories, I was a small town girl with big dreams who moved to the big city to pursue acting. Funny right?! It is such a relatable prequel, but the journey is always different for everyone. Talent, personality & confidence will get you noticed, but to book the roles it takes self awareness & vulnerability. That raw emotion is what connects your character to the audience. So in a nutshell, yes, learning the craft is the basics of knowing how to break down a script, knowing how to take direction, etc but it is also knowing yourself.
Josetta, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
To know me is to know I am one of those indescribable people who can’t be labeled with just one thing, so the term renaissance woman hits the nail on the head. A person with many talents or areas of knowledge. Yes, I am a developing actress, but I am also a Fashionista and content creator. Basically I’m an artist. Born in Jacksonville, NC as a kid I’ve always wanted to act, model, dance, sing, make clothes, be a writer, I literally wanted to do it all and I did just that! Except sing, I quickly found out I am not the best singer, but that’s another story. My mother is my rock and always encouraged my ideas big or small. Because of that woman I know I can do anything or at least have the courage to try new things. Growing up I took Ballet classes/ dance classes went to modeling school and even started my acting journey with workshops and background/extra work. Fast forward I went to college at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) where I earned a degree in Family & Consumer Sciences w/ a concentration in Textile & apparel & a minor in Mass communications-English writing. After graduating NCCU, I attended Full Sail University’s Masters program for New Media Journalism. Even throughout all of that schooling I was still taking acting classes and extra work, but acting wasn’t top priority because I was still finding my way and acting opportunities in North Carolina were scarce. It wasn’t until my move to Los Angeles, CA in 2016 that I really committed fully to acting and that’s truly when my journey began.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Most non-creatives will think “wow, she does a lot, she needs to stick to one thing” , but that’s the beauty of art, it’s such a broad umbrella that it’s all about being well rounded and collecting the puzzle pieces to put together the whole puzzle. I want to be clear, as a creative, we don’t do just anything, we are very strategic to building the bigger picture. Not to mention, as an actress you are unemployed until your next booking. So staying busy and keeping our mind going will always help with the creativity.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
“The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing there is no limit to my creativity and being able to share something positive with the world. During covid I had to find ways to keep myself sane and I unlocked new skills. I created a YouTube channel called “Lips & Liqua” where I review alcohol brands, give fun facts, and I have a segment called the L² Hour where I create easy to follow signature cocktails. It’s fun for me and I only hope that my audience is inspired and entertained as well.”
