We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josephine Koch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josephine below.
Josephine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I created in recent years is a short film titled aptly; “Chaos Theory” because it was made during a period of self-actualization, and discovery for me in 2022. For context this movie was made after a nasty breakup and a lot of loss in my life. This film was thought up during my recovery from a hit-and run car accident in which i was on a friend’s pedal bike and an SUV barrelled into me, then pulled off into the night the wrong way on a one way street. This was also made post medical emergency. This video is important to me since it was the first time i could show a true visual representation of what chronic pain and schizoaffective disorder feel like for the individual experiencing it. It depicts with plenty of movie magic with a sprinkle a little reality, (as i recorded post seizure in an ambulance to show what i looked like;) the trials, and tribulations of the mind when experiencing a breakdown. It was pretty cathartic to record Chaos Theory. It did really take a lot of effort to make in recovery from the accident. I even went through the effort to fake the opening scene for dramatic effect. It took a ton of time to edit together and render on that dinosaur motorola smartphone. However, thats one of the main reasons i value with preformance art short film is because of all the frustration it took to make it. Lift-Off Global, a subsidary of Pinewood Studios included it in their First Time Filmmakers Showcase. I am very proud of that. I’m glad I made something someone else somewhere found impactful enough to include in that series. Lastly, this project is dear to me because I hope that it can maybe help someone with this disorder feel less alone. I noticed there’s almost no forms of media featuring this nuerodivergency , other than a few interviews of people with this characteristic about them at all available for anyone to view or comprehend. I find that strange. There a a ton of tv shows, movies, fine art etc that depict the struggle of having anxiety, depression, dissociative and even schizophrenic disorders but not schizoaffective. Hopefully this film can be used as a tool help someone who experiences these symptoms either seek out professional resources to help ease them of their pain, or to understand their personality better to improve functionality in their daily life.
Josephine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So i am a 23 year old woman whos moved around a lot but im originally from North Philadelphia. Im not going to fully get into how i got into art as im not an idiot, but i did start very young and went to a middle school that got me into bigger shows under many mediums, and an art high school for media and fine arts. I have had my hands working on many pieces around this city and even in other places. My field of expertise is as a tattoo flash artist as I was an apprentice for years. However ive had parts in fashion design, mural/grafitti arts, my own filmmaking, preformance art, script editing, spoken word poetry, vaporwave inspired graphic art, preformance art poetry chapbooks photography, classical fine art and 12 years give or take of martial arts experience you want to count that. Oh and i play a bunch of instruments. Consider me an… very occasional ghost writer for… some very important projects in the past that are under not my name precisely because it was a collaborative effort. I am most proud of being able to contribute to those projects, how much freaking money we raised for charity for some of the world’s most pressing issues right now,my short film, and moreso my upcoming projects, collaborative and indivdual. There is an photography book coming out i am making in tandem with an undisclosed famous artist soonish and i will soon release another short film titled, “Dont Be A Moron”. ,soon enough. Im going to write a disclaimer here of just because i stated what i said in the last question, ive done a lot of work on myself so everything i say here isnt bullsh*t and i implore the readers to not misunderstand me or assuming this account isnt accurate due to my nuerodivergency. Thanks. Also im being vague because this very question is what i want to answer with my upcoming projects somewhat.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
So I sold digital graphic design vaporwave images in connection with beats that’d id provide mainly to up and coming rappers back in the day, prior to this nonsense. I mean i think they looked cool but now the interface is so annoying and crypto based that all the “crypto bros” freaking ruined a cool idea with souless execution.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just want to be heard, properly credited on a lot of stuff, and understood as many people dont seem to understand where im coming from because ive had such a weird life up to this point. Money would be a bonus as i am not rich but thats not ever really my goal. I do this to keep my head on straight and survive. I do this because i have to.
