We were lucky to catch up with Josephine Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Josephine , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew ever since I was a child that I wanted to be a singer. I grew up in a musical family and my twin sister and I would be singing and harmonizing constantly around the house. After the first season of ‘American Idol’ finale, I remember getting up on my toy off and having a performance in front of my twin. I remember asking her “Do you think I can make it?” And she said yes! So ever since then I’ve been working towards a path as a professional performer and musician.

Josephine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an Opera singer and pop-punk vocalist under the name “IgikoPop”. My music is specifically written about and in the style of late 90s and early 2000s Internet and nerd culture. A lot of my music comes from inspirations from my childhood, having grown up with a huge appreciation for anime and Japanese culture a lot of my songs are about things I liked when I was younger that newer fans are starting to find out about through Tik Tok and modern social media platforms. Along with my performance background under IgikoPop, I am also a Harajuku fashion lover and model, having worked with well known brands such as Hot Topic as well as Harajuku brands like 6%Doki Doki. When my band and I travel to different cities for gigs like anime and comic conventions I have often performed and modeled usually on the same day! I am most proud of how far my music has come compared to four years ago, now people from all over the world listen to my songs and it really is a great feeling knowing your music is making the world a better place!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think how distinct in my branding and style is can be a turn off for some non creative people, but that’s okay! I like to think of what I do as being my authentic self, with the green hair, stickers and all! Harajuku fashion in some ways can be like performance art, using your clothes and your body as a display of your authentic self and representation. I find once I start singing opera people start to really appreciate all I am as an artist haha!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of my job as a performer is seeing how many fans come out to the cons and shows and how they are inspired by my music and how outgoing and approachable I am. One of my favorite moments this year was when a young fan waited months just to see my concert at a Comic Con, she wore all my merch and made a custom IgikoPop mask. That moment made me realize how powerful my work is and how it affects people in such a positive way. I think that if the world is a better place because of my work then that is the most rewarding of all.
