We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Zigelboum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
A little background: It’s 2020, and after four years of tirelessly working to make Brooklyn Botany a success, I came to the realization that if I wanted to take it to the next phase, my best bet was to sell the majority of the business to a private equity company and join their team to grow their family of brands.
After a few months of back and forth, the deal finally closed in February 2020. It was the first time in close to 5 years that I thought I could take a breather. However, by the time March 2020 rolled around, everything was thrown into complete chaos, and my only job around the clock was solving supply chain issues to keep things going. The marathon continued until May 2021.
In May 2021, I got married and went on my honeymoon to Tulum, Mexico. It was the first time I could think clearly about what’s next for me and what I wanted to do. I began reflecting on what had inspired me throughout my life and what I could do to make a difference.
While at the hotel, I noticed a Turmeric Honey Shampoo, and down the street, I found a coffee shop selling Turmeric Lattes. It suddenly hit me: Turmeric, the natural herb that helped my dad so much back in the day with his joint pain, seemed to be everywhere. But upon doing some Google searches, I couldn’t find a brand that was educating people about Turmeric and its benefits. That’s when I delved into extensive research about the tremendous benefits of Turmeric, such as its natural anti-inflammatory properties, which could help with various health and skin concerns at the root.
Given my skincare background, incorporating Turmeric into skincare was an obvious choice, but I wanted it to be more than that. I wanted to build an “everything turmeric brand” with a simple name that would focus on health and wellness, beauty, skincare, haircare, tea, and anything else we could introduce to the world using the highest quality Turmeric and other natural and clinical ingredients we could find. I realized that many people were still hesitant to try it, which meant we had a lot of work to do. And that’s how TUMERI was born.
Joseph, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After a few years in the beauty and skincare industry, I wanted to do more. Perhaps COVID inspired that too, as it became very clear what is important. People were focused on their wellness, self-care, and overall health, and just trying to get through the day. After my inspiration in Tulum, I wanted to drop everything else to focus on this project, and I wanted to do it fast
TUMERI is more than just a skincare and wellness brand; it’s a passion-driven endeavor dedicated to unlocking the tremendous benefits of Turmeric and other natural ingredients to enrich and elevate people’s lives. We firmly believe in the power of nature to enhance not only skin health but also overall well-being.
At TUMERI, we take pride in our commitment to sourcing the highest quality Turmeric and other carefully selected ingredients. Our mission is to educate and inspire, shedding light on the remarkable properties of Turmeric as a natural anti-inflammatory, which can address various health and skin concerns at their core.
We’re not just another brand; we aim to be a trusted companion on your journey towards a healthier, more radiant you. With a focus on health, beauty, skincare, haircare, tea, and more, we want to introduce the world to the incredible potential of Turmeric in all aspects of life.
I want to build an “everything turmeric” movement, where well-being and self-care intertwine, empowering you to embrace the wonders of nature and cultivate a harmonious balance between mind, body, and soul. If I accomplish this in some way, this will be the work I’m most proud of.
Any advice for managing a team?
I believe this journey is still a work in progress for me, but it has taught me numerous valuable lessons along the way. Let me share a few of them:
You truly get what you pay for. While good talent may come at a higher cost, opting for cheaper alternatives often proves more expensive in the long run.
If you find yourself thinking that nobody is doing their job right, take a moment of introspection. It’s possible that you aren’t effectively communicating, leading, or delegating tasks as you should.
Your team’s belief in your vision, idea, and business hinges on your unwavering certainty. If you’re not convinced, they won’t be either.
Never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement. A simple acknowledgment of a job well done can go a long way in motivating and inspiring your team.
Approach each day with the resilience of a goldfish with short-term memory. Leave behind the burdens of bad days, weeks, or months and wake up each morning with the conviction that today is the day things turn around.
While it’s essential to act swiftly, always consider the long-term implications of your decisions.
Communication cannot be stressed enough. Open, transparent, and consistent communication is the cornerstone of a successful venture.
Remember, learning from mistakes and adapting is all part of the journey. Embrace these lessons, and let them guide you as you continue to grow and flourish.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I worked in Customer Service at a big corporate company for two years. My sole purpose for being there was to try to secure a spot on their marketing team. However, when it became evident that this opportunity would not materialize, I made the decision to leave the company without any concrete plan for what to do next.
Upon introspection, I delved deep into my passions and discovered my affinity for more creative work. Filmmaking had always been one of my earliest and strongest interests, so I took the plunge and enrolled in film school.
Throughout my journey, I grappled with the feeling of not being specialized or proficient enough in any particular field. Learning to direct films, which demands a diverse range of skills, proved to be challenging and discouraging. I consistently perceived this as a significant flaw in myself.
However, as I eventually left school and stumbled into the world of business, a revelation dawned on me. Being a business owner entails harnessing a combination of various skills, not necessarily honing in on just one. It was during this realization that what I had once perceived as my biggest weakness, transformed into my greatest advantage.
