We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Whaley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
Great question,
I’ve been the Chairman of United States Retail Corporation for over 12 years. We’ve done a lot of innovation in different industries and locations. However, the most innovative project I personally am proud of is Media Plus.
A full-service branding consultancy and PR laboratory, developing brands, media, and technology for brands to use for interacting with their audiences. The software combines research, design, and advertising operations into one studio to create innovative marketing infrastructure, processes, and methodologies. Starting at $99
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I always say the birthdate of our company is November 15. 2007. Because that is the day, I wrote the initial foundation on the back of quick start guide to the original iPod touch. That next year I also met an amazing mentor the late Allen Bailey who founded the Harlem Gospel choir which is known around the world and perform for both President Carter and President Obama. He taught me a lot about patience and timing gifting me a full-screen printing machine that he was going to throw away that he used to print within the beginning stage of his career in the late 5os. That screen press machine I used to start a small manufacturing company to do promotional gear for DJs in New York City.
Fast forward five years, I’ve changed the business model three or four times due to the lack of consistent profits. Relocating to LA, I met my now really good friend and on the company C- level executive team Denise. Who help me get the company to the next level and we got invited to New York fashion week 2012 then with proper timing and patience, we grew became a standing figure in my hometown and telling my story to the graduating class of fashion institutions.
In a general summary of us United States Retail Corp (USRC) is a retail solutions providers, with ability to build everything in house from footwear to cosmetics.
What sets our company apart from any other company is we are multi-international as well as we own our resources or have high-value stakes within those resources. For example, the material that is needed to make clothing, footwear or even cosmetics we own the factories that create the raw material.
Personally, I would have to say I am most proud of this company’s ability to adapt to any changing situation as well as taking a front seat in climate change, equal rights and diversity since 2010.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Over the last decade, expanding the business into different sectors became crucial. We’ve grown to operate in retail real estate, education, sport marketing, and book publishing. Over the next 7 years we plan to expand to wine &spirit and more. As our business grows and the economy changes its hard to stay in the same industry this business was built on which was fashion.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
As a Leader, a few things I learned in my journey for any entrepreneur to help them manage a team and maintain high morale would be:
Lead by example: As the leader of your company, you set the tone for your team. Be a positive role model and lead by example. Show your team members what it means to be professional, accountable, and collaborative.
Develop a strong company culture: Your company culture should reflect your values and priorities as a business. Create a culture that fosters respect, collaboration, and innovation. Encourage your team members to take ownership of their work and to be passionate about the company’s mission.
Hire the right people: The people you hire will determine the success of your company. Hire individuals who are not only talented but also fit well with the company culture. Look for team players who are passionate, driven, and share your company’s values.
Provide professional development opportunities: Invest in your team members’ professional development by providing them with training, mentoring, and opportunities to grow within the company. This will not only help them to be more effective in their current roles but will also help to keep them engaged and motivated.
Set realistic expectations: Set clear expectations and goals for your team members, but make sure they are realistic and achievable. This will help to prevent burnout and frustration and will also help to maintain high morale.
Stay connected with your team: As a CEO, Co-Founder, COO or any other position of leadership, it can be easy to become disconnected from the day-to-day operations of your company. Stay connected with your team members by regularly communicating with them, being approachable and available, and soliciting feedback and ideas from them.
Remember that managing a team and maintaining high morale is an ongoing process. Be flexible, adaptive, and willing to learn from your team members. By prioritizing your team’s well-being and investing in their success, you can build a strong, productive, and motivated team that will help to drive the success of your company.
