Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joseph Sinapi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joseph, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Throughout building my business from inception to today and beyond, I consistently turn to my parents for advice or use them to vent about something that has happened with the company. I will say my parent are probably the most educated people in the cruise industry while having absolutely no professional association with the industry. My parents are why my business can grow and succeed from emotional, mental, and financial assistance. They have been there without question or ulterior motive, so much so that I am happy to call my dad my business manager as of August 2022.
I know that one thing my parents did right, amongst many things, was instilled in me that doing what is right is always the best option. I have taken that with me every step of the way while growing my business, and I have never let the easiest choice be the road I took if it meant going against my morals. From day one, I promised myself that I would never choose to further the business if it meant hurting others. There have been times when I could have taken a few opportunities that would probably have me waking on an easy street now, but those options did not align with my morals.
Due to this, the most important aspects of the cruise industry are environmental sustainability, the positive impact on places we visit, and the fair treatment of all employees and crew.
Joseph, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Cruise Ship Crayz is the product of a fierce passion for the cruise industry. Throughout my childhood, our vacation of choice was typically a cruise. So in 2012, I decided to create a blog on Tumblr where I could share my knowledge and passion for the industry with anyone willing to listen. That little opinion blog attracted some nice views, nearly 2 million worldwide within a year. I decided that I could potentially earn a living doing something that I love and said, “let’s roll or sail with it” with a little chuckle from my wonderful humor, I started creating one of the most visited cruise resource websites in the U.S.
Cruise Ship Crayz offers clients an insight into the industry to assist in the decision-making process for their next sailing, which can now be booked with one of our incredible agents. Cruise Ship Crayz connects cruise lines, destinations, potential clients, and vendors to propel the industry into a better, more sustainable future. Our main product is making the average cruise experience more enjoyable regardless of the circumstances through the unbelievable details we put into all resources we provide.
I always knew that I wanted to spend my life with a career in the cruise industry, and from the start of my professional studies, I worked toward that goal. I studied at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, and took the number one lesson of networking to heart, starting with my professors. A few years into my studies, I networked with a professor who lead me to my first role at Celebrity Cruises in Marketing in the Boston region. After spending some time in that role, I moved to a role with the largest tourism organization in Rhode Island, the PWCVB, with the assistance of another professor. This organization was under the leadership of an incredible force, Martha Sheridan, who, after some time, let me know that she sits on a board of people with nonr other than Christine Duffy. Well, my networking skills allowed me to network with some of the most powerful people in the cruise industry, and well, let’s say the rest is history.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I built the reputation of this business by allowing my passion for the cruise industry to shine through everything I do. This passion leads to knowledge, and knowing how to relay that knowledge to your clients and colleagues is complex. From day one, I only wanted to relay facts to anyone who interacted with Cruise Ship Crayz. As much as I want to ensure my company is the first to report something or share it with the public, I have never allowed a single thing to be shared without confirmation from cruise lines. By staying true to this vision, we became a trustworthy source of information for the cruise industry! Additionally, I decided that regardless of what the truth might look like, we will always relay the truth, not our opinion on the truth but the facts behind it! As a result, our clients know we will never sugarcoat or manipulate something to make it look pretty, so when they ask us, they will get the truth, even if it is something they do not want to hear.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Cruise Ship Crayz was a “side hobby” rather than a side hustle because I never intended to profit from it. I started Cruise Ship Crayz to share my knowledge on an industry I was passionate about to educate others. Once I began to post informational blogs, I never looked at their analytics. One day I finally decided to turn on google analytics and, to my surprise, saw that over 2 million people worldwide had read my information in just one year. With that information, I decided to take this blog on Tumblr to an entire website that can expand and add resources to assist people and companies in doing business with the cruise industry. On October 16, 2015, cruiseshipcrayz.com debuted and was instantly popular. December 2016 Cruise Ship Crayz received its first dollar in income, it might not have been much, but it was revenue. On May 23, 2018, I was invited to my first naming ceremony on Carnival Horizon, one of my biggest honors, and the Horizon still holds a special place in my heart. In September 2018, I sailed on my first “comped” sailing for work; fast forward to July 2, 2021, when I sailed on Carnival Horizon, my first sailing after shut down, July 2022, we hit our 100 Millionth view. In December 2022, we hit our 10th anniversary as a brand.
