We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joseph Rojas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Trial and Error, however it really started with learning to over come my self doubt, and being able to take a risk and betting on me. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted I would tell anyone who would listen that I would create my own stories, that I would create those escapes, that I would create! It started with recording a movie review with my phone in a dark room, at an ugly angle, and making one of the worst things ever, to prove to myself I wanted nothing else. I kept making video after video, making small improvements, finally signed up for a production class to get some more hands on experience and to continue to build self confidence. I met some amazing people, got to start creating with others, making short films, music videos, we shot a couple weddings, some advertisements and much more. Wanting to better understand my camera, and how to light, or what lighting changes on a subject, posing, framing, etc… I started getting into photography. Doing some research and attending youtube university, I took off, with anyone who was willing to be my test subject. Down the rabbit hole I went, when I landed on a specific type of photography, that I grew to love. Boudoir, I’ve always loved the idea of capturing a moment for someone and them having this moment of realization that they’re beautiful, strong, powerful, and wonderful. The reason I fell in love with boudoir photography, is for that fact and more, you get to see a clients face light up when they see the final photos, and almost have this moment of “is that me” and now I’ve been able to show them, that they are, sexy, fierce, powerful, beautiful, worthy. Being able to capture a moment for someone and to see their confidence grow on the spot, and either show them that they are those tings and more or sometimes just let them reconnect with that realization. I love creating escapes with film like so many have for me, and I love being able to help someone see how amazing they truly are. Being okay with failing. attempt after attempt has helped me continue to grow, which sounds funny, however its the not giving up if something goes wrong or if someone says no, you can always learn from it and fix it and you can always reach out to others. The skills you learn, over time and through continuing to try, however the thing that really keeps you going is passion, that is more essential than anything else in my opinion. The craziest thing, my biggest obstacle has been and at times still is, my own fear, my self doubts, and I don’t think those will ever fully go away, however because I love this and I know this is what I want to do every day for the rest of my life, I’m learning to ignore those thoughts, comments, and negativity. I believe you have to be the change you seek, and through it all, progress not perfection.

Joseph, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a drive and interest in working and creating films, and capturing moments or bringing stories to life through many different art medias. Years of wondering what if, years of always wanting, finally just took the leap and started with my phone, and teaching myself by reading everything I could, and saved up to get my first camera have no clue how to use it. With trial and error, with reading and watching anything I could find, to continue to learn and understand the mechanics, the techniques, and more in order to get better at telling the stories I want to bring to life. I’ve gotten better, however I feel I have so much to learn still and will always have things to learn, so I will continue to develop my skills, artistic perspective and hopefully work with and meet wonderful people as I have been. I offer multiple different packages of photography, depending on the subject and style you may need. My main focus is portraitures, with my true focus being boudoir photography. I’ve shot advertisements, weddings, music videos, vlogs, short films, real estate property walk throughs, and anything we can get our hands on. I have packages for all kinds of video and photography needs, and I always try to work with clients to deliver exactly what they need and keeping it with in budget. My proudest moments have all involved the feedback from clients, how they feel or the thank you for capturing those moments exactly how they imagined or sometimes better. Through my art and its many forms, I’d love to continue to help people achieve higher self-confidence and an appreciation for who they are.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media, reaching out, trying to grow my portfolio, website, and brand as whole. Different groups, and reaching out with multiple direct messages, to introduce myself, what I’d like to do, and proof of previous works.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My current goal that keeps me pushing forward, is creating as successful business that will support me as my main and only job, so that I can focus on my craft full time. I want to travel and take my photography and video creation global, to learn about about different cultures, and different people’s perspectives.
