We recently connected with Joseph Orlov and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
This year I took a huge risk when I decided to become music partners with one of my best friends Matt Barri. We knew this was a risk for the obvious reasons like what if we fail and waste our time etc. Yet, the largest risk was our relationship. We wanted and still want to keep our personal relationship at its best. That’s why for every studio session or meeting we have, we also just hang out together, watch stupid youtube videos and catch up. It was a decision that I think we’re both very thankful for. We keep each other on our toes and working and it’s been a delight working with him on art.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Joseph Orlov, a 22 year old songwriter, producer and vocalist originally from the UK. I moved to Los Angeles three and a half years ago to continue my journey. I attended Icon music college and there met Matt Barri, one of my best friends and my music partner. I write songs for others, but also myself and it is my pride and joy. I also paint clothing under the brand Solo la Moda which is soon to debut online in stores, for now though it just operates through instagram. I some of the things i’m most proud of are the collaborations I have releasing next year. I can’t say names but I have been working with some of my personal favorite artists, creatives I truly look up to. Collaborating with rapper Felly as a then-18 year old in highschool was definitely a high point. Although quality-wise it doesn’t hold up to my newer stuff in my opinion, it is still my most streamed song to date.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just want to make others feel amazing. Some of my favorite memories have come from being at concerts and the energy you feel when you’re there with friends or someone you love just feeling it. It’s pure energy and energy can’t be destroyed only converted. You feel everything. So what I really want to do with Jorlov and my project Crumb Pit with Matt Barri is shows. I just really want to be doing more live stuff, and putting on the sound of the UK in America. Drum and Bass is such a cool subgenre of music that is just now starting to really hit the states, I want to be the British guy in the room showing it to them.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting messages from people telling me their personal attachment to the music. That to me is really rewarding. You can get streams and feel good about it but a number is just a number, and it’s easy to forget that its people out there listening. Whenever I get a message it humanizes everything for me and keeps me going.
